Banker Box Handle Helper

The combination of thin cardboard, heavy boxes, and two flights of stairs to my workplace mean that sometimes it can actually hurt to carry such a box.

Reminded of langfordw's ergonomic plastic bag handle ( thingiverse.com/thing:3230 ) I quickly sketched this up in OpenSCAD and cranked out an STL. This is clearly less sophisticated and less ergonomic langfordw's, but I think it will do the job nicely.
Now that I am officially and perpetually a winner you are welcome to enter the next contest and receive similar praise and adulation.

Quick Fume Filter parts

This is to eliminate the ABS fumes from a MakerBot or RepRap.

I was tired of getting a (literal) headache from the ABS fumes off of Wintermute (my Cupcake CNC) and decided to make a filter. There are several other filters on Thingiverse, but they all seemed to be more concerned with removing the smell and less concerned with actually removing the VOCs that are along with the smell.

I started with a PC-case fan and a HEPA filter with the carbon prefilter, but the fan just didn't have enough power. I tried the most powerful PC-case fan I could find.

I ended up using a 12V DC bilge pump:
amazon.com/gp/product/B001O0DE9E

I'm using this HEPA filter from a vacuum cleaner:
store.electroluxusa.com/el029.html

It's about 50% more expensive than the other HEPA filters, but it's washable, which makes it worth it to me. It's also square, so it's easy to make a mount and seal for.

Here is a video where I am testing it. (My wife says it looks like I'm sucking ghosts up into it. :)

youtu.be/SN6HTDGGLfs?hd=1

The result of this experiment is intended to go with the fume hood by Built-to-Spec progress seen in this blog post:

A cardboard wine rack. Holes are 3.5" in diameter -- too small for Magnums, but about right for a standard 750mL bottle. As an added bonus, a variety of stars and coasters are cut out of the waste cardboard.

Inspired by robyward's Assymetric Wine Rack thingiverse.com/thing:4965 -- but I modified the design to fit the limitations of my 12x24 build materials.

TODO for version 2:
- make the holes bigger. 3.6" would allow some larger bottles to fit.
- ditch the side holes, they aren't secure enough for bottles.
- make the struts wider.

Cardboard Surfboard - 6'4"

Cardboard surfboard core structure assembly. Cut and assemble these parts to form the shaped core structure for a 6'4" surfboard. Fiberglassing instructions on my project website will help you complete the board build.

I've been making and riding cardboard-core surfboards for about three years now. They work. Leaks are not the huge problem you would expect. And they happen to look - what's that old term the surfers used to use - awe..., awes..., awessss..., Bitchin!

These files are also a source of replacement part cut patterns, if you've ordered this board core kit from me or a cutting service. Just search through these files to find any part that's been damaged or gone missing. It shouldn't be too hard to cut one or two pieces by hand, with an x-acto knife.

This set of cut patterns is published under a Creative Commons attribution, share alike, non-commercial license. Derivatives are permitted, but discouraged, since this is not the best format for making changes. But if you do figure out some useful modification, I would be pleased to know about it, share it, and possibly integrate it into my file production pipeline.

The license is non-commercial. The primary purpose of publishing these files is to enable the lowest levels of the board-building ecosystem (where I reside) to experiment with building these boards at the lowest cost. Lots of people have local access to laser cutters, and cardboard is ubiquitous, so widely distributed low-cost production of these core kits is possible.

If you see glowing dollar signs in those translucent hexagons, you'll want to build at least one and surf it before considering whether there's any money to be made. I would be glad to discuss it with you. But I recommend you do a little "non-commercial" research first.

Bottom line: if you really want to build one of these boards, and can't get a core kit from me for whatever reason, here's a way to make your own.

If you build a board from these files, I will be thrilled to see pictures of the results. I'll feature the first response on my project web site.

Here's a handy little cardboard spool you can use for your MakerBot filament. I designed it for a thicker cardboard than pictured, but all I had around when I was inspired were some pizza boxes.

As posted on my blog charlespax.wordpress.com/2010/01/08/cardboard-spool/

See it in action as part of the future Bowden filament drive box charlespax.com/2010/01/26/makerbot-filament-box-and-drive-mechanism/

The latest version can be found in subversion at svn.makerbot.com/users/charles/bowden/ .

EDIT 2010-03-21: I added a divider to the files. Thanks, Kevin. I also decreased the size of the hole that secures the filament to better grab the it.
Version 0.24 is designed to be housed within a ~1mm card body (shirt card), with a variety of options for hacking. The transmitter is tiny and handy for small scale radio broadcasts, building a distributed PA system for performances, linking your personal audio player to your car radio, or for general audio experimentation.

The new version solves many of the problems in v0.22/0.23:
* Full assembly instructions on instructables.
* Artwork/info added on housing.
* Stereo/mono conflict resolved - can now accommodate stereo and mono plugs.

KNOWN ISSUES IN v0.24:
* circuit box slides around when switching on/off or plugging in.
* PP3 power lead needs better access to battery tray.
The transmitter is tiny and handy for small scale radio broadcasts, building a distributed PA system for performances, linking your personal audio player to your car radio, or for general audio experimentation.

The new version solves many of the problems in v0.21 (See project website for v0.21):
* dimensions of net refined for better fit to battery and pcb, and sleeve.
* transmission seems to be fine on the whole.
* spacing and hole sizes fixed for components on PCB

v0.21 solved many of the issues of v0.1:
* a lot less bulky, more friendly on the pocket
* improved component layout, slimmer, more stable
* no nasty cable ties
* more accessible for those without laser cutting facilities - can be hand cut, or plotter cut.
* cardboard more resilient at joints than acrylic.

KNOWN ISSUES IN v0.22:
* circuit box part needs to be restrained within sleeve - fiddly when removing battery tray.
* PP3 power lead needs better access to battery tray.
* separate, powered, mic design required.
