These objects are custom modeled directly from the objects in my personal home, which I designed and built myself. However, they are common household appliances and construction components that can be used in just about any design.

More architectural objects will follow. Download the PDF for brief instructions on how to build your own 1:24 scale home model, and to see what other objects I plan to design for my model home.

The actual photos of my home are for model relation purposes. My 3D model of my home is accurate to within 1/64" in most areas.

2-7-2012: Uploaded a few more progress pictures of the project. I took photos of my TV screen, pellet stove window, and the "bricks" in my engraved concrete entryway, and printed them out on photo paper (to scale), cut them out, and glued them in the appropriate places. Looks great! :)
It's parametric to finger diameter in mm, but I haven't yet figured out how to keep the diameter of the inset on the top of the ring stable for all ring sizes, so that you don't have to scale your designs.

I'm also going to see if I can come up with a better way of attaching the designs than the 3mm magnets, which won't fit inside smaller ring sizes.

Once those two issues are figured out, this project will be a go!

Spiro Gear Drawing Apparatus

This project is what inspired my Gear O' Clock gear profile. A very simple continuous .075 radius. Formula below for making your own...

youtube.com/watch?v=VHtRhu262zk

Print out all or a few of the gears.

Grab a mechanical pencil, Sharpie Pen, or an similar fine drawing utensils.

Hold outer gear, place utensil in any one of the inner gears and draw many shapes.

Feel free to use my design to make any new gear designs you wish. I only ask that you share working ones and upload them as derivatives. The designs can be endless. Squares, ovals, rectangles, blob shaped and any combination can be made.

The diameter of the gear teeth is .15 inches. (See drawing.)
You must calculate pi by first determining how many teeth you want.
So basically 31 teeth x 2 = 62
62 x .15 = 9.3" which = The Circumference
9.3"/ pi = 2.962 which = the diameter to base your teeth off of.
The diameter refers to the pitch circle or center of diameter of your gear teeth.

Steampunk Couture: CNC Goggles

I started this project long, long ago. I was teaching at TechShop and had the time, tools, and a drive to make something serious. You see, I have had this long history of mixed emotions about steampunk. On the one hand, it is a wonderful and beautiful to look back on generations past and reflect on all the awesome things they have done. It is great to be inspired by Tesla and Grahm Bell and all the guys slaving away in steel mills wearing top hats. On the other hand steampunk has also become a label for hastily made shoddy things muddled together with hot glue, watch gears, and brass spray paint.

Often times my philosophy is to not have opinions on things until I have done something substantial to justify them. This is me putting my money where my mouth is. This is my highly engineered, hard labor, meticulously calculated answer to why steampunk is awesome. There can be so much cool in the intersection between math and metal and leather and science and I think everyone should give it a try.

The whole set of photos from the project is on display here flickr.com/photos/gianteye/sets/72157624394079042/

You can see a bit more on how the metal components on the goggles were made here flickr.com/photos/gianteye/sets/72157619078382624/ and find out a bit more about the prototyping process here makersmarket.com/seller/gianteye/blog

I fuel my insatiable love for design and adventure through ventures like selling digitally fabricated jewelry on etsy. You should take a look at gianteye.etsy.com or get in touch with me at m sinbox.org if you have ideas, advice, job offers, commissions, or cake.

You can tell time with by looking at a series of twelve pegs on top of the clock, or with the LCD screen, if you need a more precise time. As time passes, a belt with a bump on it passes under the pegs (all happens hidden inside it) and rises them. One pass from left to right takes 12 hours, after which it takes another twelve hours to do it from right to left.

You can read time by looking at the pegs. If it's AM, then, if the second peg from the left is up, it's 2 AM. If it's PM, then it's the opposite : the second peg on the left means 10 PM. Take a look at my images, one explains it better.
