It is quite easy to wrap your earplugs around your fingers in a 8 form, than bend it to get the 0 form (see pictures) en push it in the box.
After taking it out it is almost complete untangled.

Insert the earbuds in the spool, rotate the spool with your thumb to wind up the wire and then snap the cover shut.

There will likely be updates to this so it is listed as work in progress since ive yet to print out the latest adjustments to the hinge and snap close features.

12-26-2011: Increased Headphone Hole size in spool to accomodate a different pair of headphones. Decreased Slot size in outercase.

11-15-2011: Updated Outercase parts to increase hinge hole size and surrounding material slightly. Modified Snap feature on top of case to increase width and depth of snap tab(tab broke off rather quickly on last revision, hopefully this will help.)

This one is closely based on Brett Beauregard's business card ear bud holder brettbeauregard.com/blog/2011/06/laser-cut-business-cards/. It is designed in Open Office, and will be the basis for a student project at pemtech.pbworks.com/ It is expected that students will make revisions to their original design, probably at least 5, before they get the design just right.

Here are the photos of the models I made to get the design to work properly: flickr.com/photos/connors934/sets/72157627576859948/

Once they get the physical design layout right, they will be able to raster a picture or their name onto the holder.

The undercuts on the bollards and the jack port should make it impossible, if not unrealistically expensive to make that way.

The picture is pretty self explanatory. Put earbuds in, wind and then push the jack end into the hole provided.

EDIT: This only seems to work with the new iPod / iphone earbuds with the volume control buttons on the cord. Thanks to all those who tried with other earbuds.
( unplggd.com/unplggd/turn-old-credit-cards-into-earbud-holders-146446 )

I loved the concept, but felt the design could be improved. This design significantly reduces the time it takes to wrap and unwrap. You wrap the long way, and the over-wrap locks things in quickly. The big speed improvement though, is on removal. As soon and you remove the over-wrap the entire cord bundle just slides off.

As an afterthought, I noticed that there's a nice area for business card-y stuff
