This is the first release of the Boot-strappable Open Laser Cutter project that I've been working on for the past few months. The goal of the project is to construct an open design laser cutter with a large cut area (about 1 meter square), for about 5%-10% of the cost of a commercial system. The design draws heavily from other open laser cutter projects out there (such as the Buildlog 2X Laser Cutter) in using inexpensive aluminum extrusion and optics for most of the structural frame, while here most of the custom parts are 3D printed from ABS.

The printed parts represent about 10 hours of total printing time on a Makerbot or Reprap, and have been designed with the hope that they would be of general utility to anyone printing out a large CNC system -- not just a laser cutter. These include parts such as NEMA17 motor holders that mount onto t-slot, idler brackets, pillow block bushing mounts for motors, idlers, and shafts, and so on.

These are based on Rev E and are modified to use 1/4" (5.5mm) acrylic instead of wood, which includes minor tweaks to T-slot widths, stress relief in the T-slots, widening of certain components like the fan cover parts, and removal of the bridge on the power supply cutout, all to make it as crack/break resistant as possible.

Marble Run adapter for Ikea Malm dresser

If you've got one of those Malm dressers from ikea -- ikea.com/us/en/catalog/categories/series/07468/ -- then you can turn it rather easily into a pretty sweet marble run. Marbles will roll across the top of the drawer, then down this half-ellipse-shaped ramp, and then across the next row of drawers in the other direction.

To make this ramp, cut it out of a thin, flexible material, and assemble the pieces. In my dreams, this ramp should be made out of 1/32" birch aircraft plywood with a laser cutter. In real life, a laser printer, a cereal box and an x-acto knife work fine.

Photos forthcoming, as soon as I've made a set of these to replace the current manually constructed prototypes. I haven't finalized all the dimensions yet, and some bits (epsecially the cutouts for the drawer slides) might be in the wrong places for your dresser.

Edit: Design, test, iterate! Made a couple of small tweaks. Some photos of the previous version, sorry for the low res.

For simplicity and to help keep the thickness low it only has 3 leafs. This particular design does not scale well to more leafs unless it is made much larger. The initial design did have 4 leafs and is built in a way that would allow it to scale to a different number of leafs more easily. If anyone is interested I could upload that as well.

This card has slots in the back that allow you to stick a 2" x 3" photo in the back and reveal it when the iris is opened.

I have this setup for 8.5" x 11" sheets, but if you have a bigger sheet you can combine the two files.

RepRap RoofTop Spool Stand

I made this as a very simplistic way to support a spool of plastic over my RepRap, since I'm short on desk space.

It works just fine with charlespax's nice carboard spool design:
thingiverse.com/thing:1550
I have now also designed my own printable spool that will fit on this stand:
thingiverse.com/thing:9039

The slot at the top takes up to a 10mm shaft, while the slots at the bottom are sized to grab hold of the top 8mm studding on a RepRap Mendel.

It's designed to require as little assembly as possible, and you should be able to make one out of wood too, although that might be a bit wasteful, as it's also designed to be lightweight.

If people really want it to be secure on there, then I'll make a design with flanges to bolt on with something like a y-bar clamp.

Edit:
* Now including handy 10mm and 8mm inner-diameter bushings, in case you want that spool to spin a bit more smoothly, especially if using some spare 8mm threaded rod as the spool's axle, which might cut into the cardboard.
* I also updated the frame file to give it longer feet, after finding that the legs can be a wee bit wobbly.
Since I printed a set before I updated it, I later glued a couple of extra feet onto my prints to improve stability, which worked quite well.
Sure, I could drive down to Officeworks (A megastore of stationary here in Australia) and simply pick one up off the shelf for a few dollars (Well, $15 for one this size). It would have been a no-brainer. But that just didn't seem sporting!

So last night I sat down in front of my computer and fired up CorelDRAW and designed this and today, armed with a sheet of 6mm MDF, I set my laser cutter to work. It's got enough room to fit a bunch of magazines and should I need more I can just cut them out! I figure it cost me about $6 for the MDF - less than half the cost of buying one :)
The LAZOR mount is technically an ancestor of this design, as I used that base as a starting point when designing this.

Includes a mount for a micro servo and a flag to block the laser beam. This should be compatible with the unicorn firmware & hookup. I haven't assembled yet, but I think the pen down angle will be 60 and the pen up angle will be 0.

Only printable on a MENDEL!!!! The base is 14+ cm wide! Also, it'll print much better with the smaller features on a stepstruder!

UPDATE: we test mounted this at my local makerbot club's meeting this Monday. The mounting holes are a little too close for the makerbot z-stage, we ended up using some tape to do the test. Will change and update in the near future, in the meantime I can confirm this works!

Smoking's bad for you. And bad for your makerbot. But it sure did help me get the laser aimed here:

A cardboard wine rack. Holes are 3.5" in diameter -- too small for Magnums, but about right for a standard 750mL bottle. As an added bonus, a variety of stars and coasters are cut out of the waste cardboard.

Inspired by robyward's Assymetric Wine Rack thingiverse.com/thing:4965 -- but I modified the design to fit the limitations of my 12x24 build materials.

TODO for version 2:
- make the holes bigger. 3.6" would allow some larger bottles to fit.
- ditch the side holes, they aren't secure enough for bottles.
- make the struts wider.
