ENJOY HUMANITARIAN RODENT RELOCATION!

Joining in on the mouse trap craze is the Flaptrap.

The theory is simple. Door opens from one way.

The trap comes in three parts.
The Door which slides into the body and tightly clips on to a solid hinge.
It will open when small pressure is up on it but is blocked from opening on the opposite side.
The body houses the animal obviously. It includes a built in clip as seen in the pictures. This inserts into end of the unit with liners on each side to allow for smooth placement and more security of the animal. Simply press down on the the clip to remove the end from the body and release the trap without harm to creature. The flaptraps end piece also includes a small baiting shelf to make sure the animal reaches the end allowing the door to close.

Unit is certainly makerbotable. Though I have not tried it yet.

Its a complex design, now its should be all perfectly scaled, and all the parts should fit together. Even dough I took more then 1 day designing it and doing it, I don't know if its going to print perfectly because I don't have a 3D printer or a MakerBot. But I'm very confident its all going to work out fine, to assemble it just read the Instructions below. Open the pictures to see them more clearly.

Printable mouse trap for the Cathals Mouse Trap challenge.

This mouse trap combines the both desires of the mouse; the love for exercise wheels and peanut butter (and ours for catching those buggers).

Idea is simple. Trap spreads the aroma of the bait from the openings at the sides of the wheel.
The mouse then goes in to the wheel from the hole and in inside tries to reach the bait from the opposite side of the wheel.
Then the weight of the mouse turns the eccentric wheel and rotates it over 90 degrees, locking it in place and blocking the exit.
Weight of the mouse acts as a locking mechanism.

Not yet tested but in my mind it works.
dailymotion.com/video/xcfwgj_exercise-wheel-mousetrap_animals

UPDATE: In previous zip file, one file got corrupted at some point and did not work. This has been fixed now in the MouseTrap.zip -file. In the MouseTrapBPlat.zip are resized stl files that are for people who have build platfrom bolts still installed.
I don't know how these flaws got past me unnoticed and I apologize for the lack of quality control.
Big thanks to Cathal for bringing these to my attention.

UPDATE #2: Lesson learned. Never know what to anticipate when you're not printing these yourself. Nothing big but the orientation for the other foot was wrong, too big to print that way. Fixed now in the mousetrap.zip

UPDATE #3: Finally uploaded a video of this in action. Sorry for the wait :)
3-4-2010: Thanks to erickphd and his students at Penn. College of Technology we have some modifications to this model. If you have already printed this model, do not attach the Counterweight rail to the Base And tape 2 Quarter to the right side of the Tilt-N-Trap.

ErickPHD Said

"Testing shows a reasonably reliable trigger at 27 grams but the average mouse is 10-25g so my class thought that it needed to be a bit more sensitive"

ADD two quarters and removing the Counter weight rail should give a More sensitive Design. Check out the picture to see the modified design
Thankfully I don't have the vermin problem Cathal does. The downside is that I have neither tame nor wild mice to test this design on.

The idea is to cut out most of the lid from a peanut butter jar and insert this printed lid. Hopefully it will allow the mouse inside to feast on the delicious delicious peanut butter but not let them out. (Who would want to leave a room lined with peanut butter anyhow?)
I've added new pictures and completed the build and usage instructions. I spent my time on those so am still cleaning up the OpenSCAD files.

UPDATE 2010-03-05
I've uploaded two new STL files. These supersede all previous versions:

* MouseMotel_0.3.stl
* MouseMotelLid_0.3.stl

These are for a 70 mm ID bottle. I used a 20 oz/591 mL one.
I've uploaded an OpenSCAD screen grab of the parts assembled to show how they go together.

Once I clean up the MouseMotel.scad file I will upload it too.

UPDATE 2010-03-04
I've uploaded an STL file of the main part. I still need to tweak the flap that contains the mouse.

UPDATE 2010-03-02
Look at the photo; mine works!
And it's still alive!

;)

Seriously, since any garbage can contains a suitable enclosure for the trap, i.e., a soda or water bottle, I decide to focus on creating a printable one-way flap that can be fitted to a cut-down bottle. This reduces the size and number of parts necessary for the trap and because I used my favorite modeling tool, OpenSCAD, I parameterized the design so it can be used for bottles of various diameters.

Here's the basic concept:

* Cut off the top of your selected bottle
* Size and print a ring that fits inside bottle
* Print flap that sits inside the ring
* Insert 2 3 mm captive nuts into holes on outside of ring
* Insert ring into bottle
* Punch/cut holes for stabilizers
* Insert stabilizers into captive nuts
* Insert a length of 3 mm plastic feedstock to function as the flap hinge pin
* Place motel at desired location
* Bait motel with peanut butter
* Wait

The mouse will smell the bait, enter the one-way flap in the bottle to get it, and be trapped!

The stabilizers on either side of the bottle will keep it from rolling around as the mouse explores its new home.

I'm still working on a few details, and will update this thing as I finalize them.

Tower Bridge Mousetrap

As I started sketching out ideas, the resemblance to London's Tower Bridge was uncanny, so I decided to go all out with it.

The elevator slides along rails provided by the entrance ramps, however there is only one way to get in. Fievel gets to eat his last meal, but he'll find himself on the ground floor for the rest of the night.

Its un-tested and will need straight rails to function well, so use a fine tuned bot for best results. The design process was a lot of fun, thanks for posting the challenge!
------UPDATE-------

I added Rails_System.zip to the files. This is a dxf and openSCAD file of the sliding rails that was written for easy manipulation even if you have no programming experience or knowledge. I want to optimize the geometry for future applications. Feel free to mess around with it.

A Better Mouse Trap

Cathal Garvey issued a challenge on the Thingiverse list a few hours ago, "Mouse get!" The challenge is to build a humane mouse trap that can be printed on a Makerbot, and that will trap a mouse and keep him in!

Uploaded here is my attempt at designing such a trap. I'm printing it now, and will test it once it's fully printed (in a few hours.) It's not the most material efficient design, but I think it should foot the bill for a maximum security mouse trapping and storage facility. In fact, if you print it out of PLA, I'm willing to bet that this trap would stand up to a mouse wielding heavy artillery (heavy for a mouse, that is.)

The idea is that when the mouse steps on the ramp, the support will be pulled away and the trap will close quite tightly. I tried to build it myself, but the bottom piece failed part of the way through because of some issues I'm having with my bot.
