The Cube holds a lot of memories for me. I have wasted many nights hanging out, sitting, and watching some amazing skateboarding around this cube. I based all of my design work from photos and memory. This was a challenging project, done all on Tinkercad. And it spins, just like the real one. This miniature is the perfect desk ornament for any lover of New York City.
See a cameo of the real life Cube in this short film about my journey as a full-time performer: youtube.com/watch?v=d04gzD3kdVY

I was struck with the new building's design and did a quick sketch up of it. It's NOT TO SCALE and probably too tall for any homemade printer to handle.

I hope some of the better modelers can create hi-res versions with more details and make it to a scale that can be printed well.

The original Luna Park was created in 1903 by Frederic Thompson. Thompson was a rebel who was kicked out the Beaux Arts Academy in Paris. The original postmodern architect, He created Luna Park- a fantasy landscape in Coney Island, comprised of dozens of minarets and towers, combining architectural styles ranging from far eastern to renaissance. At night, the landscape was transformed into an electric fantasy lit by hundreds of thousands of lights.

Inspired by the Gothic Cathedral Playset here on Thingiverse, this is the first of several fantasy architecture models based on historic Coney Island buildings that I plan on creating. The original Luna Park was created in 1903 by Frederic Thompson. The original postmodern architect, Thompson was a rebel who was kicked out the Beaux Arts Academy in Paris. He created Luna Park- a fantasy landscape in Coney Island, comprised of scores of minarets and towers, combining architectural styles ranging from far eastern to renaissance. At night, all of Luna Park was magically transformed into an electric fantasy as it was illuminated by over 100,000 light bulbs. Believe it or not, this particular tower was a big influence on the Metropolitan Life Insurance Tower in Manhattan. (Coincidentally, Frederic Thompson was born on October 31, 1873- 138 years before this file was uploaded- Happy Birthday Fred!)

Please note that this is my first Thingiverse creation, and I do not have currently have access to a 3D printer to test this model, so any feedback from anyone in the community is appreciated! This is definitely a work in progress. Print one and send me a photo! Any Brooklynites interested in doing a print for me, please hit me up in the comments. I would be happy to barter!

Update: 7/1/2012

IMG_20110911_142950.jpg

This model is a deriviative of World Trade Center by BrentA on the Google Sketchup 3D Warehouse. sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=808bef05686def6fa3b08fd9ebe3d105

Having a model is definitely not the same as having the real WTC and its' people back again.

On the 10th anniversary of September 11th, I wanted to print a copy of the World Trade Center. Finding nothing on Thingiverse, I used this excellent model from the Sketchup Warehouse.

The original is an extremely complex model. I converted the groups into shapes, added a base, and scaled it way down to a printable size in Sketchup. In Replicator G, I scaled it some more, and generated the GCode for a Cupcake Makerbot with a heated build platform.

The towers have double walls, so are not filled with honeycombs.

I'm starting to get a little ambitious with my 3D printing now that the new Print-O-Matic settings make the printer do beautiful things.

One thing I've kept wanting to try is create large objects by printing it in parts. I haven't really used my printer yet for large prints since in the past I had not been confident in it enough to waste the time and effort if the print was going to fail. But like I've said, I'm starting to get ambitious.

Anyway, off to Google 3D Warehouse again, and I found the perfect item, the Chrysler Building.

After that was done, I loaded it up into Netfabb to use it's slicing feature. I probably should learn how to do this in Blender 3D properly, but Netfabb makes it so easy. Literally drag a scroll bar, hit Cut, then Export. The size of my model ended being about 320mm tall, and knowing my MakerBot can print about 105mm max, I decided to go safe and cut it into 4 pieces, each one about 80mm tall.

Included are the 4 pieces, although the full model is available for you if you want to choose different places to slice.

Go to my blog to see how I sliced and diced at blog.fox-lee.com/?p=66

I printed this with 4 extra shells so that it would only be loops on the top section. I still have some more work to do on this before its TOTALLY done, mainly finishing adding in the columns.
We wanted to see how good a city would look printed out on a Thing-O-Matic. What better city to choose than New York? So here is lower Manhattan. The file was originally downloaded from Google's 3d warehouse, but it has been heavily modified to make it printable. This was created by MakerBlock and I. The bridges didn't come out too well, but to scale them up so they would be recognizable would just make them ridiculously big.

Original sketchup file was created by Wolfman and was dowloaded here:
The buildings are Shiodome City Center (Tokyo), City Spire (New York) and One Bush Plaza (San Francisco). They are roughly to scale relative to each other - I think One Bush might be a little oversized.
My approach with the SKP or KMZ files is to work with them in the free version of sketchup and then use my trial version of sketchup pro to export them. Because I have 8 hours of trial time on the pro and it only takes a minute to export them, that works for me.

If someone wants to create a derivative and go in and make the book go all the way down to her hip, that would help make it so that it wouldn't start printing in mid air.
