An experiment to see how 3d printing can help with creating puppets. With different heads, this can easily be modified into different animals.

Parametric printing plate generator for OpenSCAD

This is a very simple, but helpful OpenSCAD script that can be used to generate three types of printing plates based on 2D DXF designs.

Essentially, this script extrudes a 2D design (loaded from an external DXF file of your choice) and either adds or subtracts it from a flat plane to give an effect not unlike relief or intaglio work. You can take these plates and use them for embossings, debossings, stenciling and possibly even ink printing!

I created this script to make it easier for undergraduate printmaking students at my university to explore 3D printing in their work, and to gain some experience with digital fabircation.

You can see more plates and prints made using this script at: flickr.com/photos/zenwebb/collections/72157631741058233/

NOTE:
I am not an experienced printmaker, so I may not have gotten all of the terms correct here!

Planter Foot Shaped Flower Pot

In anatomy terms: the bottom of the foot is referred to as "plantar". The inspiration practically dictates itself.

Behold, the first plantar planter! This podiatric flower pot design is simply a foot in a sandal, which sits in a dish. Everyone needs a plant in their life; one that resides in a container with drainage holes and a catch dish for cleanliness. This thing is a modified derivative of the Skin Layer from thingiverse.com/thing:22628

This design is a flower pot or a botanical planter shaped like a foot. I included the foot, sandal, and dish as a separate files (for dualstrusion). The ridges of the sandal slot into the grooves of the dish to offer some stability.

I've also included the Low Polygon version, LowPoly-PlantarFoot.lwo, for Lightwave 3D users out there who want to tinker.

For Single Extrusion Print: Dish.stl & Combined.stl

For Duel Extrusion (Dualstrusion) Print: Dish.stl, Foot.stl & Sandal.stl (separate nozzles)

For Tinkering: PF-LowPoly.lwo for Lightwavers who want to take it into their own direction. Have Fun!

AJGW Alain-Jonas-Greg-Wade's Extruder

A few things annoyed me when I built a new Extruder, so this project started to be just a few fixes but then I ended up fixing a lot of small issues.

This is just one more in a long line of extruders derived one from the other. I named it AJGW to reflect contributors in the main line, but I did add all interesting accessories like the heringbone gears and fast release lever.

Here are some of the new features:

*) new concept split filament guide, fixes better and allows easier access.
*) Idler hinge doesn't touch the gear anymore.
*) option (default) to use 5/32" screw for the idler which is easy to find
*) longer oblong hole for the motor screws. This eliminates the need to remove the motor when testing or adjusting the heringbone gears.
*) Top access to screws with ball end allen wrench. This allows for much easier attaching and removing, specially when there is a fan duct. Optional without nut fitting in base.
*) Heringbone gears a little thiner and nicer looking. Better fit of the screw
*) Open access to the insides for cleaning and inspection, just like Greg's
*) Redesigned Fast Release Lever but keeping the same concept
*) reinforcement to the upper idler screw attaching point, this was a frequent point of breakage
*) reinforcement behind the tractor screw's bearing, to avoid frequent breakage
*) reinforcement on the top with a little extra height
*) Idler printing sideways, this avoids weakness in the hinge screw
*) thicker motor mounting base so that M3x10 screws can be used without extra spacers
*) Various external support structures, prints better without automatic support and it is easy to clean.
*) Parametric, various simplified optins including 1.75 filament
*) Many small things that you will not even notice that they aren't there anymore to annoy you...

All metric screws, except for the long idler screws that are not available as metric.

A few extras are included, like washers that you can print instead of going out to buy them.

It was originaly thought to be used for 0.25mm layers, but it has been tested by some friends with 0.4mm too.

I am releasing a few options that make sense to me and to some friends. If you need a different option and are having trouble with the .scad files, please post a comment and I will be glad to include other options.

2013/feb/17: there is an adapter for the Prusa i3 here thingiverse.com/thing:29795 please let me know if it works!

2013/mar/17: I found another nice support here: thingiverse.com/thing:57668

Version 1.1: small reinforcement in the Idler, included STL files for both 4mm and 3/32" (very usefull only in Brazil)
A triangular insert is supplied with the Super Clamp. The insert is used when clamping to a flat support, such as a board, etc., however, these inserts are easily lost. Here's a replacement for the Super Clamp insert.
Although this part doesn't look exactly like the original, it is perfectly functional. I printed in PLA, but ABS will work just fine.
I would like to ask for the community's help in realization of this project.

I started a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo.com, in hope that I can raise enough money to develop the complete upgrade kit.

Please contribute to my UNOFFICIAL "Ultimaker XL" project on Indiegogo.com:

indiegogo.com/ultimaker-xl/

Thank you! :)
Please support the project, every cents will be highly appreciated

Some additional informations about the project:
- The original Ultimaker has a printing volume of 21x21x20.5cm (W/L/H), while the upgraded version will have an estimated 46x36x32cm (W/L/H) printing volume.
- Reinforced, yet light Z-axis mechanism to be able to support the increased printing platforms overall weight, even with big printed objects.
- The size of the upgraded printer will be approximately 60x55x55cm (W/L/H). The size difference between the original and XL can be seen on the other image attached on the left.

You remember Mr. Potato Head, right? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr_potato_head For me, in the 70s, it was a plastic potato with plastic eyes, arms, feet, and whatnot that would plug in to holes on the fake potato. Long before that, it was a collection of appendages with pushpins that could stick into a real potato. Safety laws got more strict, forcing them to give up the pushpins and use plastic potato bodies.

Meet Mr. Vegetable Head. He's a fun guy (not a fungi, though I suppose you could use a mushroom as the body) that brings back the spirit of the old Mr. Potato Head. Print an assortment of appendages, supply your own fruit or vegetable, and have fun!

Disclaimer

I am not a lawyer, but I'd bet lawyers would want me to include some comments about the size and sharpness of the parts. The pegs are really small and could easily pose a choking hazard. The points are meant to penetrate small fruits and vegetables and could poke an eye out. If you print this model for the young ones, be sure they are properly supervised when they play with it.

No fruit or vegetables were wasted in the design and photographing of this kit. Everything was eventually eaten.

A Call to *Arms*

Please help make additional Mr. Vegetable Head parts. My artistic skill in the 3D realm is, perhaps, not the greatest. We can use help with all sorts of pieces:

● More realistic arms
● More expressive eyes
● Noses
● Mouths
● Ears
● Hats?
● Anything else you can think of! Glasses? A pirate-hook arm? A variety of crazy mustaches? Monocles and top-hats?

If you make additional parts or derivatives of existing parts, be sure to post them to Thingiverse and tag them with "MrVegetableHead". thingiverse.com/tag:MrVegetableHead Let's build up an awesome collection!

Cats kick it around, it rolls and occasionally dispenses a cat treat. It consists of a cylinder with small perforations so that the food contained within can be seen, heard, and smelled. It also contains one large hole that acts as the dispensing mechanism. The hole diameter (in relation to the size of the treats inside) and the overall length of the tube dictate how easily a piece of food will drop out.

Designed for Science Diet dry cat food. Alter the dispensing hole diameter (a constant in the OpenSCAD source) for other food/treat sizes.
