TriCopter RC Explorer V.2

UPDATE: There were a few small errors on the Top and Bottom. I have realigned the screw holes, changed all nut traps to 6.5mm across. There are three nut traps that are shallower than those that are extruded into a solid this is to retain strength. I suggest you use next M3 x 20mm screw for these three. I have also added counter bore holes to the top so that 16mm screw reaches and it is easier to Velcro electronics on top.

This is a fully 3D printable Tricopter based on the RC Explorer V2.5 by David Windestål. There are 6 Parts that need to be printed and then it can be assembled using 3mm screw and nuts, and some zip ties.

Screwless Cube Gears

Thank you, all of you who've made cube gears and posted pictures. Since tbuser made these lovely pin connectors, thingiverse.com/thing:10288, I figured it was high time to make a fully printable cube gear set. Now you needn't bother buying any more screws: this one snaps together.

UPDATE: For anyone without access to a 3D printer, you can now buy these from caesia on her Etsy store: etsy.com/shop/PlasticFusion

UPDATE: New version uses tbuser's new pin connectors V2: thingiverse.com/thing:10541, is much stronger, and prints right-side-up. This is practice for making a heart-gear version.

This design also incorporates a couple of tricks that others may find useful. The center block has two very narrow slices through it, which cause interior walls to form, which help keep the tops of the holes from sagging during printing. Likewise, a cylinder is cut out of the interior of the gears, which serves two purposes. First, it makes a strong internal support for the pin. Second, it makes for less stringing between parts when you print four gears at once, because Skeinforge makes the head go from the center of one to the center of the other, so that the perimeters wipe off the nozzle.

UPDATE: By popular demand, a new version of the center block has been uploaded (BcenterFlat.stl), which doesn't have any internal slits and is oriented to print on a large face. This one is significantly easier to print, though the top and bottom holes do end up a touch tighter than the rest.
Since Frank toddled off the production line late 2011, he has been pondering a question while waiting to fulfill his purpose. The question he has been pondering is whether or not he should ponder the meaning of life or whether he should ponder how to level up his Caterpie in Pokemon. This question shall plague him for a while yet as Frank was build to Ponder and discover.

He's 3 so I wanted to keep it simple and only put 2x2 Duplo sized studs in the cockpit for a Duplo figure and made the rest kind of fisher-pricey. Works well with all the Duplo bricks I have tried with it so far. I was having some printing issues with larger objects so I also tried it at 1/2 scale which makes the studs regular lego size. I guess the printer isn't up to the tighter tolerances needed for lego because at this scale the lego parts are a bit hard to get on though they do work.

I think of my self as an artist and not an engineer so the tolerances are less than great and it may have some pretty big design and structural issues. My 1:1 Duplo print mostly clicked together and holds without glue but I had to clean and sand some of the parts a little bit more than I would have liked to make it work. Had to really sand the holes for the rotors so they would spin freely. I printed these on my UP! with the normal and .25 mm settings. Maybe with fine and .20mm settings it would work a bit better?
