I had the pleasure to assist Bre at the Chicago Ideas Week 10/9/2012. There, I demoed my MakerBot Replicator in the lobby of the Oriental Theater with fellow Chicago mate Tom Burtonwood, while Bre gave his speech in front of an enthusiastic crowd. Before Bre went on stage, I gave him my signature "scan/print supreme deluxe". FINALLY! This is definitely the Charizard to my collection of PEOPLE!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the largest upload in Thingiverse history!
882 files @ 10.4 GB uncompressed! Includes 212 individual PEOPLE and all the source files for your learning pleasure.

I present to you citizens of Thingiverse, PEOPLE! 212 individuals to be exact! This thing represents a vast majority of all the people I have 3D scanned. The scanning software I use is called Reconstructme which uses an XBox 360 Kinect as the scanner. Every person I scanned was 3D printed on site in a matter of minutes using my MakerBot Thing-O-Matic or Replicator.

How was I able to obtain so many scans of PEOPLE?
Throughout the year I have been invited by various galleries, exhibitions and institutions to show off MakerBots and demo/display my scanning work. Scanning and printing PEOPLE gives them an intimate look into 3D printing and provides a basis for their understanding of all the possibilities.
As part of the "Capture Your Town" Challenge (http://www.makerbot.com/community/capture-your-town/ ), I captured this Guardian Lion that sits guarding my grandparents house in Rochester, Michigan. I used 123D Catch to scan the lion. For model cleanup, I used Netfabb and Meshmixer. A great model with quite a bit of detail.

From Wikipedia:
"Chinese guardian lions, known as Shishi (Chinese: 石獅; pinyin: shíshī; literally "stone lion") or Imperial guardian lion, and often called "Foo Dogs" in the West, are a common representation of the lion in pre-modern China. They have traditionally stood in front of Chinese Imperial palaces, Imperial tombs, government offices, temples, and the homes of government officials and the wealthy, from the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220), and were believed to have powerful mythic protective benefits. Pairs of guardian lions are still common decorative and symbolic elements at the entrances to restaurants, hotels, supermarkets and other structures, with one sitting on each side of the entrance, in China and in other places around the world where the Chinese people have immigrated and settled, especially in local Chinatowns.
The lions are always created in pairs, with the male resting his paw upon the world and the female restraining a playful cub that is on its back. They occur in many types of Chinese pottery and in Western imitations."
I spent my 4th of July (2012) vacation at my family's cabin in Northern Michigan and decided I needed to capture/scan pieces from my childhood. This scan is of a tribal African mask that hangs on the wall of a bedroom in the cabin. When I was a kid, I was always afraid to enter the room because I thought this mask was going to come alive and eat my soul… One time my older brother Francesco chased me around the cabin with the mask, providing me with a fresh batch of nightmares. Come to find out years later that the mask was harmless, I began to warm up to the mask. Now I really love this mask and thought it would be nice to replicate it and hang it on my wall at home.
On 6/25/2012, I had a "Capture Your Town" session at the Field Museum in Chicago. I was joined by Matt Griffin (MBI community manager), Michael Curry (Skimbal), and Tom Burtonwood (Chicago based artist).
This thing is a scan of "Sue: The Model T. Rex". I used 123D catch for the scanning process, and Netfabb + Meshmixer for model cleanup.

From the display:
"This model of Sue's head was created by Canadian Sculptor Brian Cooley. It appears in the June 1999 issue of National Geographic.
Even though it's only one-third size, all of the proportions of the model are identical to Sue's real Skull.
That's because Brian took detailed measurements before he began sculpting. Based on these measurements, he first made a scale model of the skull. Then he added muscles and other soft tissues, eyes, and finally some pebbly skin.
Life reconstructions like this model combine science and art. They are the result of close observation, scientific theory, and creative speculation."

Mike Moceri and Tom Burtonwood collaborated on a project that premiered May 26th at The Southside Hub of Production for the exhibition "On Making Things Matter". We 3d scanned (with the Kinect, Reconstructme + Netfabb) visitors at the opening reception and then 3d Printed them with a MakerBot Thing-O-Matic. All the "portraits" we scanned are uploaded to Thingiverse to share with teh internets. We have also scanned portions of the exhibition and the interior of the building and we will be installing 3d prints of these vignettes over the course of the exhibition.
I put on an awesome demo at Mini Maker Faire Chicago Northside, spreading the word about MakerBot and the potential of 3D printing. With me was Chicago based artist Patrick Lichty.

Our setup comprised of Patrick's and my Thing-o-Matic, two Kinects for scanning, a TV connected to my computer so people could see the modeling process, and an assortment of promo swag.

I scanned attendees and printed them out. They were able to take their models home with them as part of the experience. The process I used and sources are outlined in on our event card (click the second image).
I participated in an event in Chicago called Improbable Objects at the What It Is gallery. At the opening night on March 29th, I scanned and printed many of the people attending the event. I used a Kinect for scanning and Reconstructme for model construction. After I scanned the subject, I used Nettfab, Meshmixer, Meshlab, and RepG to clean the model in about 10 minutes. Then I put the .s3g of the model on an SD and printed their model out. While the model was being printed I was scanning/patching the next subject/model.
