Create a printable pet monster. I've always been fascinated with monsters/ creatures since I was a young whippersnapper. I ended up going for the imp/ gargoyle sort of design. I chose this design for the challenge of adding just enough detail for the muscle tone and facial features to come through in the final print. After experimenting with all sorts of poses and structures I decided to use a tucked position. This enabled me to model the full being in a fairly natural pose without having to split him up into bits. I wanted a clean, solid model with no nasty joints/ gaps etc. I was worried about overhanging sections of the model and the possibility some parts sagging during printing (the hands in particular) but it turned out alright in the final print. Pleased with it :)

Polyhedron Facets ( revised, parametric )

This thing includes a revised parametric script for generating polygonal facets for use in polyhedra. Several possible facets have been rendered. I know that the triangular, square, and pentagonal facets presented here are sufficient for building a wide range of shapes.

Thing thingiverse.com/thing:5028 extends this set with more types of facets, including spoke-like and polygonal facets for all shapes.

I've been wanting to create a very generic snap-together set of forms for MakerBot for some time. It would be awesome to have an algorithm that generates a queue of forms to slowly grow a very large procedurally generated object.

This is a revision of things thingiverse.com/thing:4893 and thingiverse.com/thing:4899, and an attempt to create a compatible set of snap-together primitives for building geometric forms. Thing 4893 set too large a scale to print pentagonal facets. Thing 4899 had a mathematical error which caused the different faces to be incompatible. This revision corrects that error.

Cupcake Transformer

What's cooler than transformers? A Cupcake CNC transformer with a Bre head? This is a fully articulated assembly that transforms from a Cupcake CNC to a Bre-bot.
I started with a snap-together design (see the attached concept sketches) but migrated to a bolt-together kit for various reasons. The final design allows for fine adjustment of the joint tension so the transformer can stand in any position but still be movable, positionable, transformable!

See the animated transformation here: jmillerid.com/wordpress/2010/05/cupcake-cnc-transformer/

Modeled in NX6, rendered and animated in Modo, .stl files cleaned up in Blender, exploded view created with Rhino and Illustrator, sketches with Sharpie.

Covered Bulb Socket Element

Update : I have redesigned an interlocking variant : thingiverse.com/thing:7857

This is designed for lamps where the light-bulb is inside a polyhedral shell.

This is a derivative of thingiverse.com/thing:6055. The hinged piece has been mirrored, and pieces to cover the socket have been added.

The covering pictured is built up out of thingiverse.com/thing:6281 these elements. It took me some time to build a permanent light socket for this design.

The biggest pitfall is that the light-bulb is difficult to replace. Perhaps future designs will correct this shortcoming. A threaded or slotted design, perhaps ?
