Minimalistic Mk8 replacement

The Minimalistic Mk7 replacement works so nicely, I wanted to put them on my Replicator as well. It required a slight redesign in order to fit under the piece that holds the guide tubes. I use 693 bearings on this, but you should also be able to use 623 bearings like on whosawhatsis' original.

I get much better prints with these than the stock Mk8s because they grip much better on a variety of filaments due to the compliance and there is much less friction thanks to the bearing. I was using Protoparadigm's PLA and having all kinds of problems with missing filament after reversals, but not anymore. No more lost steps or stripping on the extruders, and an added bonus is you can now clean the drive gear without disassembling the unit. Also, switching colors is quicker since you can just squeeze and pull instead of going through all that unload/reload filament business.

The model was manually reconstructed by watching the same 39 seconds of the film over and over again. I took a few liberties in the rebuild.

(1) The recessed hatches and/or the overall length are not quite to scale (there actually should be a group of four rivets after the pair of panels).

(2) The real movie prop has a bit of an overhang at the floor, whereas I made the sides go straight down to the floor for easier MakerBot and RepRap printing.

(3) I made no attempt to model das blinkenlights.

(4) I only reproduced the large text.

(5) There may be an Easter Egg inside the hollow base for fans of TRON.

Slightly more detail on my blog: netninja.com/2012/08/03/is-that-a-wopr-in-your-pocket/
I found during certain printing operations the cover would move back and forth making a flapping sound which became very annoying. So I designed the stabilizer brackets. I also found the front cover hard to remove after I put the stabilizer brackets on, so I designed lift handles which clip onto the lower alignment slot.

Both of these objects are designed with a .75mm width to space the front cover evenily and are a perfect match with the "Replicator Cover Hanger Bolt Spacers v2" thingiverse.com/thing:27223

I can't decide which one I like better, the radial, or the honeycomb pattern; so I uploaded both. To tell the truth, I'm not exactly thrilled with either, and I'm expecting someone to come up with a snazzier pattern.

The honeycomb pattern is probably more airflow restrictive, and it might benefit from a larger honeycomb pattern.

There were a few cubes already on thingiverse which I've printed out dozens of, but they all had some issues with printability or proportionality. I think I've solved all the problems with this version.

This version is flat bottomed, and has no significant overhangs over 45 degrees.

It is carefully designed in Solidworks so any changes can be quickly and easily made. I also included step files since Solidworks is pretty unfriendly to a lot of other programs.

The default size is exactly 1in^3

The Cube in the thumbnail was printed by a Fablicator.

Companion Cube Upgrade

This is an exactly proportional copy of the companion cube from portal, as traced from a screenshot.
