Stepper Driven Zoetrope

What madness has he spawned?

Yes a Zoetrope! That runs on a stepper motor and ATiny85's?

Why?

It gives the title Digital Artist new meaning, and it is a cool toy for my desk at work!

I like clowns?

I was teaching flash photography at work.. Came across Pixars 3D zoetrope on youtube and I wanted to give it a try using an Arduino. SO MANY WIRES LATER.. I thought trying to make it small and printable would be even more interesting..

Anywho.. I hope you challenge yourself and make one. You will learn a great deal through the process I promise..

BTW the wheel can be any diameter- the Hall Sensor just gets mounted on the end anyway and it dictates timing. -- use foam core it rocks....

A Magic Device called an "Air Harp".. Aka a Ultrasonic Distance Sensor strapped to an Arduino UNO with code.

Works as a MIDI player in Garage Band. So wave your hand push some buttons and let the magic begin...

Original concept found here
thingiverse.com/thing:58393

It still uses Peter Alaric DeSimone code but I am unsure "Harp" would be a good name for this while it looks like a Organ now...

This is the greatest thing to play with ever....
(I would say common sense) .

Walk up to a 1970's coffee maker in any office and you will usually find it has never been cleaned.
You have Stir Sticks, Styrifoam cups, Coffee filters, and a empty cup from the gas station you stopped at you disposal.

Learning to Model for Print (Video Series)

When I am not creating / inventing new things here on Thingiverse, I am an instructor at a local Career Tech Center in the field of Digital Media.
Teaching Junior and Senior high school students the latest in all things digital.

Anyway I have 3D printers in the classroom and students wanting to print things who have never touched a 3D application in their life.

I want them to be able to create things.
Not just download from thingiverse and print but actually make and print stuff of their own.

One of the things I like doing is breaking down problems into chapters, and back everything I teach with videos. This way they have a reference point. I usually post the video series on youtube but use the video files themselves in the classroom.

So I am inviting the community to the show.

If you're new to 3D printing and have never modeled before this would be a great start for you.. This class focuses on software vs hardware, Design vs durability, and shows you workflows for many different situations that you come accross trying to produce a good printed part.

I am using Blender-Slic3r-Printrun in the workflows, but really it translates well to other applications as long as you follow the same terminology.

youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7tGtxtIW0Iw6Vghav13UoPPAtPFTGe0I

Are you a slow learner and need an extra slow course before you hop into printing?

youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2BA5BDF79FF50122

If you have ideas for examples that would be good for new developers as far as small lessons that do not take up huge amount of plastic post them here!

This remains a work in progress until all chapters have been produced. As things are made for the series I will post the stls here. So if you see something you might want to try and make you have an example here to look at.

I ask to keep the troll level down a notch maybe , I know certain audiences like to kill the messenger before they physically try something or hear something mispronounced and raise their pudgy little arm.. So yes you linux and ard-ween-oo users I am talking to you ;) In the heat of polygon land battles my last thought is my slipping of the tongue.

So keep in mind young users watching the videos on youtube also.... Keep it clean or I will delete the comment.

Other than that enjoy!

So for today's invention I have this nifty little thing that is small, folds and is powered.

Did I mention small?

I started by finding a micro breadboard in a drawer and whispering to myself "useless".

Then I said wait this will fit on my Arduino Book Case Tank!. "Brilliant"!

But I had no holder so I started making one, then another idea "Coffee"
I was tired....

Anywho this is deemed "The Button Box" because it is powered by two 2032 button batteries. It is a small little lab that fits in your pocket that you can use to hold all manner of tiny experiments.

As it started to take form I thought it would be a great tool for an electronics instructor.

Here students here is a small box that has power....... here are the rules... and now create!

Insert your rules here____________.

If you feel lost and confused please watch this video.

I hope you enjoy!

Universal Servo Driven Tank Tracks

I am a firm believer in universal and expandable.

I have found tank treads to be an art form in itself!

Nothing was working for me off of Thingiverse as far as "Tank Treads" because most designs were already built for some robot or too big or too small so I needed something that was "Just right". And sturdy / easy to build....

So I made some universal ones with the idea that others might be in the same boat.

These are for small to medium sized bots if your bot is larger than 12in by 12in I would find a different build though.

6in by 6in for the smaller cap.

They are test driven and work great!

Armor!
Guns!

Ok so the armor is plastic and the guns are actually printable IR proximity sensors.

What? noooo....... you can do that?
Sort of..... they are actually just parts from crap shack assembled in a sexy new package that works like those expensive 14 dollar IR sensors found on most electronic sites. Mine are 3 dollars to build!

All together this mod will give you.

2 printable Infrared Proximity Sensors.

Armor side plates with new mounting holes.

A front bumper that can hold even more sensors.

Im leaveing this thing as a Work in progress just because I will have more sensors in the future.

Imagine taking a case, programing your Arduino for awhile with bits of code. Saying to yourself one day "I want to play with servos" Take your case print out the tank tread mod and away you go. That is the goal for my project. Easy upgrades... constant change without regrets. So when a pair of tank treads show up on thingiverse I was on that with a passion.

These treads are a great design... They needed to be upgraded a little to fit my design but nothing that could not be modeled in blender.

Wheels now have 2mm holes for the servo wheel plate to connect to the wheels.

Servos are screwed down, no more rubber band.

idler is still a good idea.

Lost the Scad because well the only thing that might change is the servo size but I tried to use a very common standard size in the build. Links are provided in the instructions to everything you need for this mod.

1. Needed to keep my experiments stored and mobile.
2. Needed wire management!
3. Needed an area to store components. (optional)
4. Needed to fold and look darn cool when it was folded.
5. Needed to be slightly parametric height design. (just print more threads for height)
6. Needed mounting rails for upgrades.

So recently I have been on a quest for a sealer that will make ABS look amazing after you file or sand the ever living crap out of it.

I like to sand harsh 90 degree corners on personal handheld products like the phone cases and Arduino labs. The problem is it leaves sanding marks.

Also ABS glue leaves behind a shinny look in areas that does not look pleasant.

I bring you more of a public service information than a Thing-A-Ma-jig.

Other clear coats just do not even cut it or feel sticky after awhile. These do not!

Both products work about the same except I like Valspar frosting much better.

It dries so fast! and covers the most aggressive tooling.

Valspar works on PLA also. Rustoleum FAILS on PLA.

See attached photos of test.
I hope you enjoy the tip ;)

If a stormtrooper wanted an iPhone case this would be his weapon of choice.

MANY MANY MANY prototypes died in the making of this case. I have been working on this thing for a pretty long time trying to get just the right level of nerd and battle ready into the design.

The Tank has a lid that protects the screen from kids - dogs - wolves - teenagers - terrorists ..... bring it is all I have to say.

A lanyard hole has been added just in case your jumping from a plane and you wanted to check your email.

Screws hold the design together, so no kids are taking this thing off unless their nibble little fingers can find a M3 allen wrench!

Anyway if you have an extreme lifestyle and you want a case that will take a mortar shell.

Enjoy.

Im going to be adding these to my store if you intrested in a printed one.

etsy.com/shop/Nerditorium

Available in color combos:
On Fire= Neon Red Case + Yellow Lid
The joker= Neon Green Case+ Purple Lid
Hunter Special= Orange Case + Yellow Lid
The StormTrooper= White Case + Black Lid

Or Solids:
Black
Blue
Yellow
Teal
Neon Green
Neon Red
Hunter Orange

Added a 2mm x20mm screw version for those that want less grip on the sides.

Also added a itank girl (get it?)
it is less tank like and has a larger area to get in there and text.
This was inspired by a student of mine after it was revealed that her smaller paw could not text as easy with the iTank. My banana hands had no trouble but I chicken peck, these younger students have freeken home key positions for petes sake!

Anyway that is the story of the new additions.

The Folding Arduino Lab

This thing is one of the coolest things I've come up with. Holds an arduino with breadboard. Has 2 drawers that you can store resistors / caps etc etc.

When the breadboard and drawer are gone, arduino with shield can be stored. Lid protects whatever you have already setup on the proto-board.

I use a m3 allen wrench to hold it together when traveling around with it. Optional PLA "Spike" (See version 2 video on how to make a PLA spike)

There are now two versions

Version 1
youtube.com/watch?v=kgz2TJHEeOQ&feature=youtu.be

Version 2
youtube.com/watch?v=hA5m9EN-Muo&feature=youtu.be

You can also use Gift Cards as the lids to the drawers for those people that would like to add that personal touch to a gift idea.

Video uploading (stay tuned)
Enjoy!

Thats not bad for having a 3yr grab the phone at any time and proceed to abuse the ever living crap out of it........But I am no longer a pre-consumer now that I have printing power!

So here is my design for a otter box subsitute that is kid and germ proof.

You'll need to go to your local comic book shop....? Follow directions and enjoy.

Make stronger parts with your replicator

Ok so I own 4 mendel maxs but before those amazing machines I had bought a Replicator for work. I vowed that I would probally let it collect dust before using it again. UNTIL I got bored. So the difference is the strength of the parts and the angle at which the fill gets filled. For those that don't build other printers and own a replicator you would have no idea what the grass looks like on the other side. So here is what you do if you have always relied on replicatorG and have never known how to slice any other way.

This is not a model but a way to make you models stronger if you only own a replicator. There are other ways to do this but I wanted it to be simple for people that dont know much about slicing.

Have a bolt but not sure the hole size to use for it?

Fact - Perimeters can add strength but they can also screw with your measurements. Now I carry this little do dad with me.

Sand it a little.... and write the following on it.

(see pic)

I added the blender file so you can get the bolt size or use the bolts as booleans.

The bottom Row of nuts are measured on the flats and will help with those SAE / Metric moments in life.

Show it to a chick on the first date... Chicks dig nerds...

1mm is for wallet
2mm is for pocket protector (snort)

The Allen Project (Allen Wrench Handle)

youtube.com/watch?v=pmzHZmHMyjs

The M3 Allen Wrench is the most elusive tool in the history of REPRAP.

Not to mention small if you have a large hand.

So here is my design for an allen wrench handle.

Features:
Swivels on the base
Magnetised to hold M3 on tip
Easy to tear apart in a pinch

I have not explored SCAD but this would make a great candidate.
