Full ABS RC plane with brushless electric motor

10 Feb 2013: BOM

1400mm 6mm sq CF tube (wing)
1400mm 3mm CF tube (wing)
1 length 5mm CF rod (tie down rods)
1 length 4mm CF tube (push rods)
1 length 1.5mm steel rod (pushrods)
1 roll - heat shrink adhesive film
1 roll 3M hinge tape
3 sheets of 1mm - 1.5mm balsa
2x 15mm 6 gauge screws
4x 30mm 8 gauge screws
Wheels - 45mm dia x 2, 20mm dia x1
1300mAhr battery
Motor and prop options as per instructions
1x 4 channel RF receiver
1 sheet, 3mm foam board (tail section)
Supa glue and hot melt glue gun / sticks
2 or 4x 5g servos - tail plus alierons

24 Nov - New wing parts for a 6 / 13 degree poly wing option (200mm chord version only) plus updated instructions.

21 Nov - 200mm chord wing, left and right wing tips added, instructions updated.

20 Nov - lighter version of the 15 degree wing joiner uploaded, trainer width aileron updated also.

19 Nov - Major crash on SKU, lost a weeks solid work unfortunately, am also waiting on advice re replacement parts in AUS for my Bot.. so all in all, is progressing slower than desired.

I have uploaded what NEW files and parts I have tested and will look forward to completing this version as soon as possible, including a new set of instructions and parts list.

Two wing designs included in this version.. on with a 150mm chord, the second 200mm, (both in a Clark Y profile) for a lower landing speed, both are 1400 mm long, in a polyhedhral configuration.

Parts included for a dihedhral wing if desired for both variants.

Both wing sets have been loaded as zip files.

The current tie down brackets and wing mount will suit the 150mm version of the wing only.

09 Nov - After a series of flight trials it has not been possible to extend the hybrid version and maintain the same flight characteristics on a full ABS model. Is easy enough to fix. I have marked this version as a work in progress. Am presently redesigning an longer version, 1300mm wing span, with a 1300mAhr battery and larger motor to suit.

rudder and tail fin... nothing that could not be done during the fitting process, just a minor refinement.

05 Nov - Updated wing profile loaded with joiners and wing mounts, increased lift and slightly longer chord, but still within the requried ratios for the current stabiliser and tail fin.. not tested as yet.. but if anyone builds it inside the next week please let me know how it goes.. :). Recommended OAL wing length is 850 - 950mm. Adjusted rear wing mount bracket to follow, which will be at slightly closer centres than the current version. Zip file added for the new wing parts.

Also added the standard length tail section (as opposed to the short tail version in the zip file) as well.. fuselage length with this component is approx 68mm longer (is called tail section V3).

Modifications to the ABS / PS foam hybrid plane as published a few weeks back to restore the static balance and update the relevant build details.

Rather than having to download the files individually I have added a zip file of the .stl's.

06 Nov - Slight tweaks to the rudder and tail fin... nothing that could not be done during the fitting process, just a minor refinement.

04 Nov - To avoid any confusion I have reduced the nunmber of files here and published a separate model for the full ABS version.

1 Nov - Updated nose cone / engine mount.

30 Oct - Instructions updated.

Based on a cub / trainer design aircraft, this thing is under construction to be a fully printable remote control aircraft.

More pics and the rest of the design to come as soon as I get a couple of parts from Hong Kong to complete the fuselage. The default pic is the assembled hull plus wings, pending reinforcement of the nose section with carbon tissue and then the heat shrink skin over the rest of the body.

Designed as a stable high lift trainer wing for the Hobby Zone mini cub.

Includes, left and right fuselage joiners and wing tips as well as the spar sections.

There is a centre joiner piece included for a straight wing, which will need to be resized as required.. nominal recommendations are 17mm wide, unless you want to extend to use it as a single piece for the width of the fuselage (suitable for those with a brushless conversion only).

Can be assembled with or without the 5 degree joiners, or use the 15 degree joiner for a poly wing (with angled wing tip sections).

The stl file with the two wing tips contains a shortened version of these parts.. seems to work fine, saves - 5 - 6 grams.

Notes post first flight.. is a very high lift wing, requires additional weights to ensure a nose down balance point.

The Version 8 files are a less agressive lift profile, is matched to the Version 5 centre spar for the centre join, wing tips and angled joiners included.

Further revision with increased pin size for strength.

As per the title.. 3 parts, a left and right wing spar, with an interally fitted aileron / flap, with hinge pins.

Made for use with 1.2mm balsa sheet on the leading and trailing edges, a balsa beam in adjacent the trailing edge as well as a 6.1mm square carbon rod for the centre support.

The opening behind the COG has been sized to fit a 5g servo.

There is also a pad on the aileron for mounting the control horn in either a left or right hand configuration.

Heat shrink film covering is recommended, or celophane with spray adhesive, but this does tend to break down with uv exposure.
