I like the twisted vases but I wanted to make something special. So I came up with the idea to make a double twisted vase. There are two the same parts, both twisted 90 degrees. This spool design allows for easy resizing of the spokes for fitting into loose spools of filament and reuse on other spools. There is no need to wind on the filament as with some other solutions. I can mount both the smaller but thicker USA sourced filament coils and the larger New Zealand sourced filament coils on my Replicator. Options are provided for mounting on the back of a Replicator 1 (and possibly other models) as well as for external spool holders running on an axis away from the Replicator.

**Update 19 May 2013:** Thanks to a heads up from MobyDisk I have made a small change which fixes a problem when printing the hub using Repg.

The printer looks much more professional just by adding that thing.

But I found out that Gijs' version is out of date as it doesn't fit for the latest version of the Ultimaker which has an updated extruder (Extruder version 2.0).

So I made an updated version that fits the new printhead very well. My cover also features a small hole at the left side that can be used to 'tunnel' additional cables from the outside into the printhead, e. g. cables from a second fan.
When I was little, I had a wooden snake just like this (but better). The cutouts allow it to bend. So I thought I'd print out something similar to see if it would work.

In PLA it is kinda stiff. A more flexible material would probably be better.

I made the snake short so that it would fit on a Makerbot, so it came out kinda chubby. It could actually be a little bit longer and still fit. At some point I will design and post a longer version for RapMan/Mendel sized beds. Or maybe a modular snake!

Oh and the STL has some weird stuff on the edges of the nose, but it doesn't seem to hurt anything when printing.

Dimensions: 80.2mm x 80.2mm x 11.3mm tall
(It is printed diagonally, the snake itself is around 110mm long)

EDIT (Feb 11, 2011)

I've included an alternate file, SnakeThin.STL. This version has a thinner core that should be only a single layer thick. It ends up being much more flexible. Skeinforge kept giving me trouble with the core so I scaled up the model slightly.

SnakeThin dimensions: 84mm x 84mm x 11.7mm tall

The trouble with 3D printing a ball bearing is that spheres don't adhere to the 45 degree rule, so they tend to print poorly, or if metal balls are used instead, then the bearing requires assembly. This is a new kind of bearing that can only be manufactured by 3D printing and comes preassembled.

It is a planetary gearset and functions like a cross between a needle bearing and a thrust bearing. No cage is required to keep the rollers in place, because their gearing keeps them perfectly spaced. The gears are all herringbone, which is why it cannot be disassembled and also why it can act as a thrust bearing. If you're wondering how well a 3D printed bearing could work under load, please check out my video: youtu.be/ZghwSBiM0sU

This design is fully parametric and made to be adjusted in the Customizer app to whatever you need. Thanks to aubenc for finding a problem in the first version.

The entire belt and buckle can be printed on one build plate on the original Replicator. The belt in the picture was made in Transparent Blue MakerBot PLA on the Replicator 2, and it works perfectly. You should be able to fit over 7' of belt at this scale on the plate at one time.

Here's a blank canvas for the new you. Or your Halloween costume. Or maybe your audition for store mannequin. Or your general purpose anonymity needs.

Sometime in the future I hope to make a full head version, but I wanted to post what I've gotten done so far in case someone could use it for Halloween 2012. The original idea was to make a papercraft alternative for artists who can't afford the "planes of the head" plaster model, so keep your eyes peeled for further developments.

I'm going to make a mask with dark paper, and use glow-in-the-dark tape to highlight the edges - I'll be Wireframe Man!

EDIT: Since originally posting this, I've seen comments by people stating they intend to make the make the mask using materials other than paper. Please note that many of the polygons aren't true flat planes, and there are a couple of twists that are challenging enough with thick paper. This mask, as designed, is impossible to build using rigid materials.

EDIT: 10/31/12 - Thanks for all the email messages, comments and photos I've been getting! I'm overwhelmed by the response. I had a family emergency these past few days, and the good vibes sent my way helped keep my spirits up.
