            <title>Sleeve Valve Engine Model</title>

            <description><![CDATA[<div style="margin: 5px;"><a href="http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:33883"><img src="http://thingiverse-production.s3.amazonaws.com/renders/1e/b9/74/7f/e5/engine4_preview_large.jpg" alt="" class="render" style="width: 240px; height: 180px" /></a><br/></div><div>The sound of the engines at the Reno Air Races is truly incredible, but this year one in particular caught my attention. A Sea Fury flew past with its original Bristol Centaurus engine, and the sound was notably different than the other radials, very low and smooth. It turns out this is a sleeve valve engine, which explains the different sound. I figured it'd be a cool thing to make a model of.<br />
<br />
Well, it turns out the Bristol Centaurus is not a simple engine (seriously, that's an understatement). However, during the search I came upon an alternate sleeve valve design used in radio control airplanes. This design is not only simpler than the Bristol Centaurus, but is actually simpler than any other 4-stroke piston engine I've seen: <a href="http://www.rcvengines.com/how-it-works.htm" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">rcvengines.com/how-it-works.htm</a>.<br />
<br />
So, here is a fully printable, snap-together model of a 4-stroke engine that clearly demonstrates the four strokes: intake, compression, expansion and exhaust. What I'm most pleased with is that the tolerances allow it to spin easily, yet you can still feel the difference in torque between the compression and exhaust strokes.

I’ve made two versions of this; one is fully printed and accurate to the game files but with a far higher detail level. The other was designed when I noticed that the cells in the item are almost exactly the same size as AA batteries and is designed to accommodate three of them making an actually functional cell (I’m actually thinking of designing a battery compartment to fit these, it should be trivial)<br />

Flipped the power input and output holes over to match with the terminal pins.<br />

We designed and built these using mainly a laser cutter and acrylic sheet stock, with some use of a lathe to turn a flexible plastic part.<br />

You can make it whatever size you want and use trace widths and spacing as needed to get whatever resistance you want.<br />

THIS HAS NOT BEEN TESTED! I suggest making a small cheap  board with an easy to measure resistance like 50 Ohms or so, ordering it through a cheap service like BatchPCB, and verifying that the calculations were correct! Throw on a cool design and you can make coasters out of your example boards. :)<br />
<br />
This sketch uses Processing 2.0 (not 1.5, though it could be modified for that - look at the XML handling) to generate a native eagle BRD file using their new XML format, so everything is nice and clean.<br />
<br />
Generate a board file, look at the Processing output window to see what the resistance, current, and power draw will be based on your input voltage (I can't guarantee those numbers are correct! I haven't tested this yet and I admit I wrote it pretty quickly - its more of an example. You should double check the length calculation section of the code - god forbid I messed something up and you waste money on a bad run of boards!)<br />

Open source 3D printer. Simple with less materials. Frame is made of a single 4' long, 2 1/2" square tube (16 gauge/1.5mm/.0598" thick, cost: less then $20.00). With the design there is less plastic parts, stronger structure, all wires are hidden, and a more appealing/finish look. The blue print file will get you more familiar with the construction of the unit. The downloadable file is my blue print that I designed and used to build the machine. The accuracy is to the exact of my build.<br />

The unit is supposed to resemble a robotic arm with hydraulic tubes. It was designed for prints to be less affected by vibrations. With the 1 solid frame, any vibrations of any axis will cause the other axis to move with it. For example: If the X axis causes a slight vibration/1mm movement to the right, the Z and Y axis will also move that 1mm to the right. This will result in a better print as everything will remain squared.<br />

There's a hole in the top half of the model for fitting the innards of a USB stick, and the bottom half slips over the USB plug to form a cap.<br />

The USB stick sticks out slightly in the back, but I didn't want to slide the top half of the model forward because of stability reasons. I might make another version with the USB stick positioned slightly forward - I didn't do that originally because the walls were a bit thin in that position, but I'm sure with some modifications it could be made to work.
