But with the geared motor extruders this was not possible because the pointed tip would accumulate too much heat and melt away because with a geared motor you can not exactly control the amount of extruded material which is just what you need to do when you want to slow down in the upper layers to give the plastic more time to cool down.

Now that we have stepper motor based extruders it's possible so I just HAD to create this object using OpenSCAD :)

The snap fit handle (needed to keep the lower part flat and printable) was inspired by the printed axis in the "Screwless Cube Gears" by emmett thingiverse.com/thing:10483

So I remodelled it in OpenSCAD and then changed the angles of the cut out cones to get a snap-closing sphere that does not fall apart by itself. The only drawback compared to the Demi-sphere is that the two parts are not identical anymore, but they are still very good for printing as they are both flat on the bottom (the larger part is also flat on the top).

A friend who works in data recovery often needs to handle many hard drives and have then easily accessible.

So yesterday we had a small CAD'n'lazzzor session and we created this mount for 8 hard drives. It's cut from 2mm HDPE. The orange thing is rubber to prevent the disks from gliding away when you move the mount.
