This is some sort of variant on the Vigenere cipher (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vigenere_cipher) but I'm not sure of the actual name of this variant, so if anybody knows, please let me know in the comments! I know it is also related to the key autokey and Alberti ciphers.

In addition, I have a prize for the first person to correctly decrypt the ciphertext below and post the plaintext to the comments... I loved the steganography challenge in the Seej block, and it's high time we had another contest... Good luck!

Oh, and you will find that brute force is not the way to go... there are 1.243841e 142 possible keys. :)

UPDATE: There is now a monocase alphas only ciphertext of the same plaintext, which reduces your keyspace down to 4.0329146e 26 possible keys.
This grow bed is big enough to hold some decent sized plants, but totally printable on a Replicator 1 build platform.

Modular Nokia Lumia 820 Shell

This morning Nokia released the STL file for the 3D shell for the Lumia 820 phone under a CC-BY-NC-SA license!

techcrunch.com/2013/01/18/nokia-releases-3d-print-files-for-lumia-820-smartphone-got-a-3d-printer-custom-print-your-own-removable-shell/

My first thought was "THIS. IS. HUGE!"

This means that at least one more company has realized the awesomeness of crowd-sourced R&D and building a community around your product... I can't wait to see what the world will look like once it becomes possible for cottage industries to pop up around all sorts of consumer products.

And so, I have downloaded the file, and cut a rectangular hole in the back, which will allow modular pieces to be either booleaned in using 3D software, or printed as separate pieces and stuck into the shell of the phone.

Printable Coin Mech 0.2

For a long time now, I've wanted to make a DIY pop machine. Now that I have access to cheap and rapid prototyping, it's time to revisit that project, and see if I can print a coin mech and a mechanism to dispense cans of soda, and wire all that up with an arduino and put it inside a wooden box.

Toward that end, here's my first pass at a printable coin mech, based on this video:
youtube.com/watch?v=85C4eh0mEJg

If you want to hack with me, the repo is here:
github.com/iworkinpixels/Printable-Coin-Mech

TODO:
1: Coin return. The cradles need to be on a hinge, and a coin return lever needs to open up the coin mech when pushed. This is especially important because if the mech rejects a slug, it will usually do so by getting stuck in the mech. We need a way for the next user to clear the mech, or this is a clear DoS attack vector. :)

2: Failsafe. If the machine is off, a lever which is normally held out of the way by an electromagnet should be released and push the coin mech open.

3: Switches. At the back of each coin chute should be a mounting point for a switch.

4: Storage. Each denomination of coin should fall into its own coin tube.

5: Rejection of objects larger than a quarter. At the very top of the mech, discs which are larger than a quarter should be automatically rejected. This may just be handled by making the coin slot to the outside of the machine just big enough to take a quarter.

6: Escrow. Not necessary, but it'd be nice if the coins that you have placed in the machine should be held in escrow until you dispense a soda, and returned to you if you press the coin return button.

UPDATE 9/16/12: IT VERKS!!!

I just got my first test rig printed, and (when I use pretend force instead of actual counterweights) it works! Now all I need to do is add some real counterweights and some switches and we should be in business!

So, after I got home I fired up OpenSCAD, edited the palago tile file, and made one!

It has a lid with a .5mm gap on each side... it should press-fit nicely and stay shut. Each cell holds 16 Palago tiles, for a grand total of 48. :)
In this version, I have fixed that design flaw, allowing for increased awesome in applications involving high-amplitude, audio-waveform-generation-based lulz.

Alternatively, you can hand it to your *really* clever friends and claim that it's a Japanese puzzle box.

Or waterproof it, put some awesome stuff in it, and bury it in the back yard as a time capsule. Really, the sky's the limit!

I've also added an alternate lid if you would like your box to be a piggy bank. If you want your money back out of it, you'll have to smash it. Just like the good old days!

LGBT Protest Coins

Buckle your safety belts, we're about to get political!

On May 22nd, 2012, The God Article, a Christian civil rights organization, posted a status update on Facebook asking its members what they thought was an appropriate response to Pastor Charles L. Worley's comments that the gay and lesbian populations should be "locked inside an electric fence until they die out."

Member Michelle McBriarty suggested that members make a donation in Pastor Worley's name to their favorite LBGT charity, and the group immediately jumped on the idea. They created a blog post to organize the response:

thegodarticle.com/15/post/2012/05/a-sinfully-beautiful-response-to-ncs-latest-gay-bashing-minister.html

I saw this idea and loved it... it's always best to respond to negativity with positivity, and this response seems like the exact right thing to do here.

For my part, I remembered the anti SOPA/PIPA coins from that protest, and thought it would be an awesome idea if folks were able to include a small token representing a couple that they personally know who has been affected by anti-gay bigotry.

So... I made these coins.

If you will be participating in this protest (and I hope you will) please print out the appropriate coin for the couple(s) that you know, and mail it along with the postcard from that blog page, to remind Pastor Worely that his words have meaning, they hurt real people, and they do not represent the Christian community.
