The townspeople loved their little castle and wanted it to be perfect.  But the little castle was empty.  Its owner had left long ago, taking all the fine things with him and locking them away.<br />
<br />
The Townspeople resolved to re-furnish there castle.  They learned to craft and create.  Making chest and chairs, tables and beds, gadgets and gizmo's, they filled the castle with things that reflected themselves and their experiences.  They created so many things that at the end of each day it looked like little castle couldn't hold any more.  <br />
<br />
But the castle had a secret.  Every night, it grew.  Sprouting new towers, chambers, and cellars. The town's people would awaken and rejoice, ready for another day of crafting and creating.  The town was proud of its magical castle, and everyone wanted to fill it with the best that they could offer.<br />
<br />
But wasn't a magical castle, it was a MakerBot Castle.<br />
<br />
Each night the daring Damsels deftly deployed their wondrous Replicator, creating new rooms to extend the structure.  Floor by floor they built up into the sky.  Until one day the little castle had become the tallest and grandest in all the Thingiverse.  <br />
<br />
And the small town around the castle had grown into a great city, filled with the incredible things and spectacular ideas.  The Makers, Crafters, and Hackers had learned from furnishing the castle.  They had perfected their crafts and honed their skills.  When they looked out on the world from the tallest tower, and saw that it too was a place they could rebuild.  And they spread across the land, sharing their knowledge and teaching others how to improve the world around them.<br />

It displays the time on two analog current meters.  I wanted to build the Chronulator to look like an old fashioned lab instrument.  To do this I replaced the original clear plastic meters covers with covers I made on my ToM.  The case was made from Red Oak.<br />
The scale was modified to show hour and minute.

All of the components can be printed with the exception of the helix compression springs.  These springs can be taken out of standard click pens.  The springs I made this for are 4mm OD and ~20mm long.  <br />
I made a small window in the "Outer Barrel" to view the key pin pushing up on the driver pin.<br />
This was a quick project to familiarize myself with the design constraints required for successful FDM designs/prints.  I thought I would distribute since it could be fun for teaching and demonstrations.

<b>Changes</b><br />

I Reduced its diameter to 85mm and changed it to a three jaw design. I then designed a system to lock it with out a wrench.<br />
<br />
<b>How the lock works</b><br />
<br />
The front face is now supported by three short lengths of 5/16" (8mm) smooth rod that go through large holes in the guide and sit against the base. When you turn the lock ring it turns the planets/nuts that pull the guide back and it pulls the screws holding the jaws back against the now supported face.<br />
<br />
( you could eliminate the smooth rods by making the outside of the face extend back far enough to rest on the lip of the base. )<br />

<i>jun 10/11</i> . Added jaw_guide.stl It keeps the jaws aligned while tightening.<br />

We know several people have tried to put a Dremel inside a Makerbot, but we don't think this makes much sense. You'll have a high center of gravity and a light frame. We love our Makerbots, but we think if we put a Dremel toolhead in them, they'll just vibrate apart :)<br />
<br />
We designed something from the ground up to be stable, rugged and still light-weight enough to be carried around. (actually, the one I'm showing in Paris this weekend now features a suitcase handle on the steel frame)<br />
<br />
The machine has an open floor, allowing it to do a milling operation on a large object.<br />
<br />
The machine was specifically developed to have a low center of gravity and be a portable, yet stable platform.<br />
<br />
The machine uses a microATX 12V power supply and Makerbot electronics<br />
<br />
The current version has a 175x175 mm cutting area.<br />
<br />
The machine can easily be enlarged along the X-axis, as the machine is built from a number of modular parts.<br />
<br />

Its small (obviously), and isn't an exact replica (Romans didn't work in plastic). Its about the right size to fire a pencil.<br />

It should be fairly obvious how it works, but I have some instructions below, and a short movie.<br />

P.S. I am aware of the Thingiverse policy not to publish "weapons". I see this as a toy -- it can fire a pencil about two feet with considerably less force than I can throw it. However, please be careful as points can always put out eyes. Also I know someone could potentially beef this up until it fires knives at a 100 miles and hour. Please don't.<br />

Now I can find them!<br />

Everyone needs a caliper.  Much easier to read a digital display than guess fractions of a mm.  The hex keys come with the makerbot.  Seemed a good holder to put them all together in one place.<br />
<br />
In addition to the above, I have a small holder for a craft knife and a tourch.  Might draw them again, but didn't keep the STL's.<br />
<br />
This was my first go at using Solid Works.  Far easier than expected!  :)

It works by connecting one of the machine's axises to a stepper motor, which then turns the workpiece. <br />
The workpiece is held between two centers (several designs included) which are supported by two brackets: one holds the stepper motor, and the other holds a 608 bearing. The brackets are mounted on a dovetail way, which allows them to be positioned on the base, to accommodate different workpieces. After positioning, the brackets are clamped in place.

I went with smaller bearings than the Mendel because it allowed me to do everything with M3 screws and it allowed me to drop the height a bit.<br />
<br />
This design is shorter than the standard platform by 10mm, I was pushing for more, but the bearings killed the height gains. It does mean that you can gain back about half of the height that you loose by putting in the automatic build platform.<br />
<br />
Also, the y rails have been separated to 70mms so hopefully that means that the platform is a bit more stable.<br />
<br />
I attached the solidworks file for people who want to play (WARNING - the file is messy and I was bad and made all of my parts in one part file). If you would like any other formats like .igs, .step and the like, just shout.<br />
<br />
Should have all of the holes teardropped later today. - Truncated teardrop holes are up, that's a pain.<br />

Update:<br />
The stl files from solidworks would not slice in Rep G, I have no idea why, if you know please tell me.<br />
<br />
I reuploaded all of the stl files and tested them in Rep G 19 they seem to work but I will not have a chance to print until Monday.<br />
<br />
I have all of the parts, now on to the debug... so you do not have to...<br />
<br />
The updated files are in the zip file, I got rid of the first generation of parts. Things were moved around a bit and these are the updates after printing round one and putting it into the makerbot. I should have all of the gen 2 parts printed and through debug tomorrow.<br />
<br />
Update 2 - I got the bearings in and other that a few "What the hell was I thinking..." moments that were easily repaired with an X-acto knife, everything went great. I'm in the process of printing the gen 3 parts and everything should be cool now. I'll post pictures and video once the final draft is printed.<br />
<br />
Update 3 - In process of using gen 3 platform to print gen 4 platform. Once I have printed and assembled it, I will upload files. I think that will be it for variations.<br />
<br />
Update 4 - Gen 5 files are out and I can now say you can download them and print!<br />

Update 5 - Instructions are up.<br />

Update 6 - I just uploaded the gen 7 version - I have not had a chance to print it yet, I was getting annoyed with the slight curve in my heat spreader and decided to rip it apart and lap it until it was flat.<br />

This update addresses:<br />

Adding nut pockets on all adjusting screws for bearing tension to make adjusting easier (do not have to hold nut in place)<br />
<br />
Back X bearings cluster has been reworked so the is less interference with the X pulley.<br />
<br />
Back X bearing adjustment screw head has been nested into the plastic to have less interference with X belt.<br />
<br />
Interference between Y belt attachment nuts and plastic bodies has been addressed<br />
<br />
X belt attachment point has been lowered.<br />
<br />
First shot at integrating endstops have been added.<br />
<br />
<br />
I think that that is about it. I will shout when the directions have been updated, everything should be the same except the endstop part.<br />
<br />
If you have already printed this and do not want to reprint, reprint parts 09 and 16, those have to do with X belt and pulley issues. (and they are small)<br />
<br />
I just sent out the third package of nuts, washers, and screws. If anyone else wants them, just message me.<br />
<br />
Gaffertape kindly updated the files so if you are using the older repG and skeinforge, use the resaved gen 7 files.<br />

Update: Finally updated for mechanical endstops, instructions still need to be updated though.<br />

No screws are needed.  The case is deep enough (17mm)  to accomodate a LiPoly or other flat battery as well as the butterfly.

<b>1. watch top.stl, watch bottom.stl;</b>  -These are pictured and have a more finished looking aesthetic, and more refined bumpers.<br />
<b>2. (rev4).stl;</b>  -These are an ultra light weight ribbed version that have a consistent material thickness, however requires a well tuned 3d printer.<br />

So regarding this project the goal was to make many different shaped toolholders that could easily be customized to fit any tool.<br />
