This was very clever. I've been looking for a mount like this.... and to think i was going to do the mask mod and drill a hole... Thank you. You saved me
Got it and contemplating a modification. Might cut a slit on the side that rests against your cheek. Glue the fuzzy side of Velcro onto the bracket. Easy to slide onto strap and then cover whole with otherwise of Velcro. Mainly it's because I use a Compumask and don't want to leave it on all the time.
Thoughts?
Very interested in your mask mount, but I can't find an address to PM you. I use a compumask and have no desire to drill holes in it for a mount! How can I get a copy as I don't have th toys to print one out?
Thanks!
Thanks for sharing your mask mount. I had one made, but, I'm wondering how to get the mask out of the shot. Did you have this problem? :-D
My mask shows up in the video too but I kind of like it because it adds to the first person view effect. My mask only takes up about 5-10% of the camera's field of view.
The geometry of the mount could be modified to move the camera forward or farther away from the scuba mask but this will alter the center of gravity or put more pressure on your cheek.
You could also use one of the extensions that come with the GoPro to raise it up.
I want to send this to shapeways and make my own. What units do I specify for the .stl you have so graciously provided?
Great idea, but I think you can improve the design by placing it above your mask in the center by threading the mask strap on both sides. I would imagine letting it hang on only one strap would cause it to wiggle around in currents and maybe cause mask leaks or discomfort.
Hi Thomas,
Thanks for the feedback! I didn't want to permanently modify my scuba mask so that's why I made it the way it is. It's actually pretty comfortable because I made the center of gravity quite low, to the point where the camera is almost at eye level. Because of this, there is a long, straight leg
that rests against your cheek, spreading out the side load of the camera across a 3" distance.
I made a very similar mount, but instead of using the three rings that the camera housing mates with, I used one of those slide-and-lock bases.
However I find that the camera's weight makes it pivot down and press on my temple/cheekbone quite uncomfortably. Your design is significantly longer vertically, so it might not be an issue. Do you have any comfort issues?

How did you solve the problem, that the goPro creates unsharp pictures underwater? Did you change the lens protection on the case or did you use it as it was?
Elk, I just used the standard lens on the 1080P setting. The pictures I posted with this thing were taken by my wife using a SeaLife 10MP camera. It auto corrects color for the different depths and colors of water. The lake we were diving didn't have the best lighting and visibility conditions by any means but the camera did a pretty good job. The GoPro camera did a pretty good job at taking video as well. It's a little blurry around the edges but not bad. I'll post some videos on YouTube sometime and at a link to it here.
It's kind of cool watching the videos from a heads up view because you get the feeling like you're playing a first person shooter! :-D

The mount works but since your mask strap is not super tight, the camera tends to flop around in the water a bit. I didn't care for the resulting video. Not a badly designed part, it's just that I didn't like having the camera on my mask strap.
