I plan to use a dc motor for my next test. stepper would work as well you can easily adapt the motor mount :)

Hmm, i'm getting a custom Z axis made at Ponoko, if it doesn't work out, I might actually give this one a try some how.

Have you tried getting it to run off a stepper motor?

FYI i'm making a RepStrap from 2 old scanners, form X and Y axes, and its the Z axis i'm working on, with a not so good design

Instructions

Cut the rack and the 3 gears from some material that is at lest 3mm thick and the triangles out of some trasperent material. connect everything with M3 bolts. and add some spacers to give the gears some slack.
