.223 round
Description
Please be careful with this print! Do not print if you are still in school or under 18!
If you print this don't make it look like a real bullet! this could get you arrested or shot if someone mistakes it for live ammo!

Well....Thanks for the comments. I know both sides understand a decision was made by me to post the model.
I made the comments about if anyone should print the model for young people that haven't heard this could get them into trouble. It's not common sense, It's a lesson I learned in school myself.

I don't see anything wrong with this. You have designed what is essentially a "snap cap" good for practicing reloading and unloading drills. These will cost less than the 2 for $10 for the commercial ones.
I find this debate hilarious and depressing all at the same time.
Hilarious because stupidity is amusing, depressing because stupidity in groups is sad.
It's a bullet. Not a gun.
Get over yourselves, people. Someone could make a more dangerous thing out of a strip of balsa wood. . . or they could just go pick up a big-ass rock, and that would work too if they wanted to commit a crime or hurt someone.
If we're living in a world where you have to b
e so PC that we can't even print NON-FUNCTIONING REPLICAS of weaponry, then I think you need to do some real self-examination.
Why not ban the "Nerf Claymore" that's on this site, while you're at it? Also, there's a Lego Infinity Blade on here. . . that's a weapon too, right?
As with AK5000 (aweso
me name) I own several guns. .38 revolver. 12 gauge shotgun. etc.
Plus, I'm an avid knife collector as well.
I have yet to murder anyone, nor do I have aspirations to. . . I suppose AK and I are BOTH doing it wrong.
Plus, in response to MakerGuy's idiotic comments below, last I checked we were stil
l living in a world where rational thought was expected of all people for self-preservation.
Scooter46290 is in NO WAY responsible for what anyone else does with this device (not that they can do anything really dangerous with it, except maybe TRY to use it for real ammo.)
I suppose you would also
say that paint manufacturer's should be sued because idiot kids huff the stuff til they end up as vegetables or dead?
That's why there are Darwin Awards for those who lack said rational thinking ability.
Now, if all of you anti-weapon PC people would grow up and grow a pair -just a bit- it would
be fantastic. :)
@TheMakerGuy - You do realize knives are not necessarily weapons right? What do you cut your food with? Ever go camping? You're seriously turning into a troll. Your can't even have a rational discussion or argument with someone without making stuff up, lying or (probably purposely) misinterpreting what others say just so you have something to harp on.
You've stated your opinion about weapons on many things now, everyone's heard it, only the people who agree with you really care and the one's who don't don't want to hear it and will never be swayed by your pathetic arguments (thats a comment on the quality of your argument, not you as a person).
At this point you're going beyond conversing or arguing and getting into the realm of harassment and puerile ranting.
All the whiney "war" and "murder" tag crack me up... I guess I am not used to being on a site with people from socialist countries or places where people have given up their God given right to arms... Its a little hard for me to understand the disarmament mentality being a free man and not a slave or a "subject", but whatever.
Also, I own literally thouands of REAL .223 Rem/5.56 NATO rounds, and I have never fought a war or murdered anyone. Do you suppose I am using them wrong?
When I was 22, I had a roommate that was emancipated and still going to high school. One weekend, he borrowed my paintball gun. Monday morning, he goes to school forgetting he still had it in his back seat.
He learned the hard way that even if its NOT A GUN, having something that does a reasonable job of LOOKING LIKE A GUN at school gets one arrested... especially if you insist on wearing a trenchcoat to school in late spring less than a year after the Columbine school massacre...
In the defense of
the arresting officer, it had bluing on it and no obvious paintball magazines or CO2 cartridges.
In the defense of my roommate, one would hope that a highly trained officer of the law would recognize a .68 caliber barrel and figure out they don't make bullets that big, and you'd need a gun barrel 3
feet long to fire them if they did...
If you think an ABS plastic lower receiver (which, on the AR-15, takes all of the recoil) is in ANY way able to be "used as an actual replacement", well, your ignorance speaks for itself. I'm thinking it'd be cool for a half-size working model out of translucent PLA, if I can get or make model files for the other components. Sorry if this isn't interesting to you, but, apparently you're not the target audience for this item.
So, MakerGuy, it occured to me. There's 11000+ designs for things on Thingiverse. Maybe 100 of them, I've been interested enough in to download. Yet, I haven't bitched ad-nauseum about the 10,900 that aren't interesting to me.
I wonder why you feel the need to push your point of view on others. You have made your point, your point has been acknowledged, and perhaps now is the time to move on. If you want to spew your hopolophobic point of view, perhaps the group talk.politics.guns would be a more fruitful place for yo
u to spend your time.
In other words - yes, yes, we got your point, since this can't possibly hurt you in any way whatsoever, how about you stop carping about things that we understand and enjoy, that you don't.
Someone please model a nuke so someone can bitch about that too. Careful, those plastic things look like "weapons" therefore they can hurt you.
I don't even want to think about what it would cost for Shapeways to do that .
Excellent, thank you! If these feed properly, it will give me the ability to have more .223 snap-caps for safe firearms drills and failure training exercises.
Having a bullet isn't against the law. I'm more worried about people printing out arrowheads and having a kid put it on a homemade arrow than I am about this.
We've had bullet models on Thingiverse for months now, maybe longer.
Is everyone on this site such big cry babies? Its a friggen plastic bullet. Awwww, I'm sad now, and I think I just piddled myself...
I can't say I much care for being lumped in to the "give dangerous things to children" crowd - whoever they might be.
It's a little high-handed to criticize Mjolnir's comment and then let that one off.
Part of the cost of freedom of expression is you sometimes have to deal with things you don't want to hear. This applies also to 3d modeling. If you would like the freedom to make what you want you should be willing to accept that there will be things made and posted that you do not want. Avoiding this issue altogether because it may end up in court in known as the chilling effect.
Also you can get arrested for using a colbertipus irresponsibly. What if I were throwing them at cops?
@linkreincarnate, Please give it a try and let us know how that works out. I'm sure the police will enjoy the joke. While you are at it please load your pockets up with the fake bullets and guns. Give'm to the kids as treats on Halloween. Make sure to print out a file so you can get out of jail and print some letters for the tombstones. Freedom of speech cuts both ways. Everytime I see one of these weapons or related things that look realistic go up, I will post my thoughts on it. Anyone can choose to agree or ignore it.
Sure, I'd think you could get arrested for throwing just about anything at cops. The colbertipus is clearly unnatural and highly dangerous, and should be treated with extreme caution.
In all seriousness, I think TheMakerGuy is right that some object are more likely to get you into trouble (including potentially getting yourself hurt) than others simply based on their appearance. I don't think it makes the designer or poster responsible, but there you go.
Because that is how the real world works. Creators are always responsible for what their creations are used for. Just ask existing gun companies. Just ask microsoft about all the money they have to pay when someone uses windows to hack something. Just like the isps are responsible when someone pirates something on their network...
I know this is a tomato/tomatoe argument but this is not a weapon. it is used with a weapon but it is not a weapon. this is actually a lot less dangerous than http://www.thingiverse.com/thi... which is a weapon and is more likely to get someone hurt (eye put out, etc..) than a model of a bullet.
I make pens out of REAL bullets, display them at my table at a farmer's market and get absolutely no negative reaction from anyone.
That seems a little extreme. Are the designers, manufacturers, or purveyors of matches responsible for your accidental fire or arson?
What a sad, terrifying world you must live in, where inanimate objects have magical powers of being evil.
If the matchmaker puts it into the hands of someone then yes they are responsible. I have yet to see someone arrested or shot for carrying a match so this is a bad analogy. Do not post designs that look like real weapons as you have no control how it is used. Plenty of gun makers have been pulled into court over this. Avoid the issue.

Just made a couple of these to see if they functioned as snap caps. My AR-15 chambers them fine, but extraction is another story! :-P The printed PLA rim is a wee bit too fragile to stand up to a beefy steel extractor:
