Summary

This is a trick dovetail joint. When assembled it looks impossible, but it's trivially simple to open.

I've searched online and found lots of other people have independently invented this mechanism, probably going back over a century. Some designs have added latches and machinery, but some details are universal!

Instructions

If you build the parts in two different materials then build Dovetail Triangle1.stl in the darker, more opaque material for the best-looking joint.

This should build without needing support, as the maximum overhang is less than 45-degrees even though it looks steeper. The pictured sample was built in PVC on my Solido SD300.

Just got my first 3D printer and this was my 3rd item to try. Surprised how well it came out. Will be printing more. Very useful boxes.

Looks great. Question, does it "lock" into place or snap into place at all? Or will it come apart "too easily" with a simple twist.

does this have a storage container in it?

There's a hollow space in the center, just over an inch in diameter. It's not a very efficient container, but it could certainly hold a few small objects.

I have to LOL a bit at this, it's is such a nice design to just print.

Just recalibrated my machine (again yes) and printed this for the first time with new filament. Fits immediately right away, I just removed it from the heated bed, put it together, and it fits perfectly together, a little bit tight so they stay in place.

Wonderful!

I've so far printed seven of these, have none left for myself, and still have two more people to make them for. To see one is to want one. Really excellent design!

Good print. Fits like a glove.

Very nice model - Fits together so well, perfect!
