Description

Inspired by the Gothic Cathedral Playset here on Thingiverse, this is the first of several fantasy architecture models based on historic Coney Island buildings that I plan on creating. The original Luna Park was created in 1903 by Frederic Thompson. The original postmodern architect, Thompson was a rebel who was kicked out the Beaux Arts Academy in Paris. He created Luna Park- a fantasy landscape in Coney Island, comprised of scores of minarets and towers, combining architectural styles ranging from far eastern to renaissance. At night, all of Luna Park was magically transformed into an electric fantasy as it was illuminated by over 100,000 light bulbs. Believe it or not, this particular tower was a big influence on the Metropolitan Life Insurance Tower in Manhattan. (Coincidentally, Frederic Thompson was born on October 31, 1873- 138 years before this file was uploaded- Happy Birthday Fred!)

Please note that this is my first Thingiverse creation, and I do not have currently have access to a 3D printer to test this model, so any feedback from anyone in the community is appreciated! This is definitely a work in progress. Print one and send me a photo! Any Brooklynites interested in doing a print for me, please hit me up in the comments. I would be happy to barter!

Update: 7/1/2012
I've updated this thing with successfully printed files created by Jason Batukis and the MakerBot Botfarm for the 2012 Mermaid Parade trophies. Thanks Guys!

Instructions

Once all three sections are printed, glue them together. The model is meant to be printed in white ABS, but its your call! A clear or semi transparent material would be really cool to try- clear PLA?.
Enjoy!
