In the void that is my life waiting for my makerbot kit to arrive, I have been thinking about a way to get a larger build area within the existing cupcake frame.
My idea is to turn the X axis 90 degrees (will become Y axis) and mount 150 x 150 mm build platform to it directly. The platform wil protrude out the front and rear openings at the extremes of travel.
Then mount the extruder on the old Y axis (will become X axis) and mount that on the Z platform.
This results in the same axis layout at the reprap mendel.
Problems with this are:
1. The Y direction internal size is only 230mm, which is barely enough space for the 60mm carriage plus 150mm of motion. Might have to mount the drive motor outside the rear panel.
2. Very tall builds, or any time
the Z platform is moved up, the extruder might interfere with the top frame. Might have to devise a more slender extruder or cut larger opening in top panel.
3. The most difficult problem is that for clearance of the build tray out the front of the machine, I will have to chop the top off the lovely
laser cut Makerbot logo. :-P

nice work! i've been thinking about a larger version for a while now, but didn't actually start to rework the plans. will you share your files with us?

You'll definetly want to use PLA for this... From what I've seen it's much less likely to warp than ABS (of course I've only used ABS so other's warps look much better than mine)
Printing 200mm x 100mm with abs = set course for Rigel 7, 'Warp' Factor 6.
that's right, that comment just happened
the reprap has a much bigger build platform -- the issue when you move the table (like the makerbot) instead of the head (like the reprap) is that you end up requiring a build base about 4x the surface area of your table -- so to get a large work area, your machine ends up having to be really large.
that being said, moving the entire toolhead in a gantry-style system can be a little complex (and has to carry quite a big of weight, and be stable at high speeds, and so on...), and so the moving table design has lots of benefits, too. :)

I really look forward to seeing if the makerbot-derived plans can scale up larger, I would love to have a refridgerator-sized one. (Probably not going to be possible without some serious reworking, but it would look pretty cool.)
