Description

A friend at our makerspace made a little engraver with some dvd burners, following this Instructable instructables.com/id/Pocket-laser-engraver/ (working surface : a bit more than a business card)

But I wanted to give it a nice structure (and maybe an enclosure later), this first version is even foldable :)

Instructions

The spacing between the little smooth rods in the salvaged DVD can vary (in our case it was approx. 47mm), so you may have to measure with a caliper what's yours and tweak the source file.

Beside that, this version was made to be cut from 3mm material and assembled with some printed parts and M4 bolts (I had a bunch of M4x16, but a little shorter would be better).

Unscrew needed parts and put everything on the structure (reuse the little bolts for the motor plate, or take M3 and file holes to fit).
Alternatively you can replace the 16 bolts and 8 printed parts that hold the smooth rods by 8 zip-tie.

At the end you'll have an ultra-portable-laser-engraver perfect for small demos and little jobs :)

Nice upload! I would so love to have one of these, very much! I have a couple of questions. What are you running it with in terms of software and would you be willing to entertain a question or two in the future as I attempt to construct my own? Also if you know, what was your total cost in the end? So amazing! :-D

Not sure if I'm the best person to ask but I'll try :)

(on Linux) He use Inkscape and a plugin to generate gcode from the vector drawings, and then send it with maybe GRBL or something for CNC, and the other day I think he used Pronsole from Kliment's Github of Pronterface.
It seems that's also a lot of things to learn from the Instructable comment's
thread but he gave up to read all of them.

The total cost is probably around 50-100$ (depending if you need to buy an Arduino or already have one and other things) but I'll ask him.

Good luck if you construct one (at least it's easier than a reprap ^^)
