Description
This is thingiverse user dom's laptop stand (from this comment: thingiverse.com/thing:32#jsid-1237162568-10), with the Hokusai Wave pattern. These are dom's improvements over the original laptop stand design:
- less sharp edges on the bottom
- slightly longer stands so 15'' notebooks also fit
- a 90 Degree Angle at the holding area, so the notebook has a smoother fit
- also made the holding area slightly deeper for a better fit
It fits my 15" Macbook Pro perfectly (only problem is that I laser-cut the notches too wide; jamming a piece of paper in them fixes this - no more wobbling).

view allI can't remember anymore - I think it was 4mm (could measure when I'm at home), but the material I used was too thin given the size of the slots. Best measure the slots in a vector program, and choose material that is slightly(!) thicker - or adjust the width of the slots for your material thickness to be slightly smaller than the material is thick.
Whichever thickness you use there will be wobbling if you size the slot exactly at the thickness of the material (the laser beam has a certain width too). Best experiment to find what works for you.

Make sure that the notches in the design match your material's thickness, then cut. I set the wave to be rgb #ff0000 and the stand shape to be #000000, which your print driver should allow you to customize. The wave's shape is a vector shape, so no bitmap engraving should be necessary.
If you can figure out how to intersect the two shapes correctly so that the laser doesn't spend time engraving outside the actual shields' areas, I'd love to know how (-:

How thick of a material did you use for this? (What is it already set to use?)
