Great idea put in action! :-D
I've tried to do something like that in 1992 but there where no tools available like laser cutters back then. I was inspired in a TV animation series.
It will be a challenge to make it autonomous using sensors. I'd like to share some ideas about that.
I have also built something like this, but seeing these makes me want to revisit the idea. Last time I built one it was hand fabbed. I much prefer your design, it is very tidy. I'm going to make some for my wife and I to do battle with our ferret.
I'd like to see if it's possible to do optical object detection through the ball. You should at least be able to do optical communication between balls. I'm guessing an accelerometer/gyro could allow you to easily get a basic idea of the state of the ball and detect when you've encountered an obstacle as well.
I guess I know what to build after I finish my turtle shell racer. :)
