Self-portrait from a distorted and cropped 3D scan.
Made on MakerBot Cupcake #169 using LAYWOO-D3 wooden filament.
I did little finishing work to hide the 3D printed-ness of this piece, choosing to keep it rough. It fits the nature of the sculpture, and it fits the temperamental nature of the wooden material. (See how it burns at the top, as the nozzle spends more time in one area.)
Scanned using Skanect, modified using MeshMixer, cropped and sectioned using Netfabb Studio Basic.
__Not_Me_remeshed_subtracted.stl__ is the final version of the sculpture as a single piece
Section_1.stl through Section_7.stl are the pieces that I printed on my tall MakerBot Cupcake
- Not_Me_remeshed_subtracted_slicing.fabbproject is the Netfabb Studio project file that I used to split the full sculpture into sections
Each section was printed iusing LAYWOO-D3 with 30% infill. Earlier tests using 10% infill (the usual on my life-scale pieces) produced top layers that sagged and collapsed.
I printed with rafts enabled for better stability, then snapped off the leftover "skirts" at the edge of the sections rather than try to fully remove them.
The pieces were lightly sanded at join points and glued together using Gorilla Super Glue.
