Description

This is the skull of a Tarbosaurus, an Asian relative of the Tyrannosaurus Rex. The scan was originally posted online by Artec, a maker of 3D scanners, on their 3D model download page, artec3d.com/gallery/3d-models/. (Some cool stuff there, by the way.)

All I've done is sliced it into 4 pieces using Netfabb, to make it easier to print. The STL from Artec is super clean, so if you have better ideas for how to prep the piece for printing, download their original file and give it a try!

Instructions

Print the four pieces, top front & back, and bottom front & back, using support. Glue together. If you have problems with the bottom back piece, you can print the left and right side pieces separately. This will let you have them centered on the build platform. Note the little nubbins that print with these pieces - you can glue them on to the corresponding bones on the top back piece.

I found the best assembly sequence to be:

1) Join top front and back on a flat surface
2) Join top front and bottom front
3) Join bottom back left side to the rest of the skull
4) Join bottom back right side to the rest of the skull

Hi there,

I am Art Yukhin, co-founder and President of Artec (www.artec3d.com).

I have just discovered Thingiverse and was happy to find first http://www.thingiverse.com/thi... by LukeChilson who has printed out one of the scans from our gallery (head of Sappho) and then to find your earlier post about printing out Tarbosaurus skull.

I already left the comment on LukeChilson page that we previously were not sure if we had to continue uploading new scans made with Artec3d scanners to our gallery but now I am pretty sure that this was a good idea. It's nice to meet passionate people who are really using these models.

May be we would also get an Artec page here on Thingiverse and upload some scans directly her?

Please come up with some ideas on what else you would like us to scan and upload!

Best regads,

Art

Welcome to Thingiverse, Arytom, and thanks for supplying the scan data!

Your scans are superb and print very nicely.

If you're looking for suggestions, I say go for more museum pieces: Statues and fossils make for great subjects! Anything interesting enough to be displayed in a gallery for public viewing is probably going to be something people will love to to print out for themselves.

Hi Art, actually if you just create a Thingiverse account with the username "Artec" then thingiverse.com/artec will go to it.

So you should be all set! Bre at Makerbot is very enthusiastic about this.

Hi Art!

Of course you can setup an account on Thingiverse and upload anything. Perhaps the admins can then set up a redirect, so that thingiverse.com/artec will point to your page?

I am glad that seeing these scans printed has encouraged you to post more!

Pff big print ;-) but it came out nice. I printed

"tarbosaurus bottom back right" and "left" with a bit of custom support. top back full support. bottom front, top front with no support :-)

Greetings, how long did each section take to print?

top front 2 hrs, top back 4 hrs, bottom front 3.5 hours, bottom back about 1.5 hours each half.

zomg, the thumbnail of the first picture - i thought it was the real thing.

Awesome print and nice paint job.

No paint, brown ABS

I love these kinds of prints. :)

I love these kinds of prints. :)

Nice print, that's super smooth, what layer height did you use?

0.25mm layer height, and 0.5mm layer width, based on a profile generated by makerblock's tool.
