Description

A space themed (and noninfringing), Lego compatible version of the classic game. Take turns guess the grid location of your opponents space ships. When you've destroyed them all you win! Unlike the traditional game the board is only 8x8, there are only 4 ships and the ships are not all straight lines. Are you ready for this space-aged challenge?

This was a huge undertaking for me and I suspect a fairly significant project to print. It started when I couldn't find the original Battleship game for my sons in stores any more, replaced with a new fangled hex based one. I vowed no one should have to put up with this injustice and sought to remedy it. I decided to make it Lego compatible because I know that 3D printed Lego blocks work. I leaned heavily on thingiverse.com/thing:9512 for measurements. Also thanks be to thingiverse.com/thing:6866 for saving me a lot of trouble designing the shuttle ship.

The originals are in Blender. I didn't do a very good job of not being destructive to my previous steps, a decision that bit me in the butt more than once. There may be some things in there if you wish to modify it, tho. Future modifications may include latches to hold the lid to the base, different ships for both sides, and simple extended rules to keep the game interesting.

Instructions

All parts have been scaled to print on a Thing-o-matic as-is. Multiple stud plates are included for as alternatives to risking 100 at a time or to make replacements when some get lost.

Manufacture
1. Print 2 each (one for each player) in any color you like of: SpaceBattle-ShipsPlate.stl, SpaceBattle-Base.stl, SpaceBattle-Lid.stl, SpaceBattle-Stands.stl, and SpaceBattle-PartsBox.stl
2. Print 60 studs in red (30 for each player).
3. Print 100 studs in white (50 for each player).

To Assemble for play (see attached picture for illustration) :
1. Put the stands in the base.
2. Slide the lid into the stands.
3. Attach the parts box to the base to keep it from tipping.
4. Put approximately 50 white studs and 30 red studs in each player's parts box.
5. Place the ships on the grid on the base.
6. Use the grid on the lid to keep track of your guesses.

To Store:
1. Remove all ships and studs from the base and lid and place in the parts box.
2. Disassemble the lid and stands from the base.
3. Put the parts box and stands in the base.
4. Put the lid on the base.
5. Hold closed with a rubber band.

Awesomely cool! Have you printed this yet? I'll give it a shot as soon as my MB comes in.

Since I live near a Lego store, I'm thinking of perhaps buying all of the standard parts (they sell 'everything that will fit in a small bucket' for $15, which is a great deal, and should allow me to cover all of the studs, plates, etc. Then I could print the unique parts - the case and ships. Not
as 'pure' as printing the studs, but if I had to guess, the Lego studs are probably more 'snappy', while the printed lego's that I've seen so far felt looser.

Speaking of which, would you mind sharing the Blender file? I'd love to modify the case to be flat, so I can hot glue in Lego plates.

What
do you think?

Sadly I am those who are a fan of the technology but do not have at this time the wherewithall to own one. Consequenlyll I made designs and hope that someone else will help me remine them by printing them. So I have no idea the tolerances or how "snappy" things will be.

For the life of me I thought I had included the originals. I meant to. They're included now.

Very nice, but NASA already sank my Space Shuttle! :'(

I couldn't tell what you meant by Lego compatible till I downloaded the ships. Very cool indeed. Leaves it such that you could build the game in Lego and use the ships to play until the printer finished printing the game base and 100's of pegs. Clever.

Not the intended reason I made it Lego compatible, but that'll work.

If I ever get around to writing the rules of the game as is I'll justify the shuttle by saying that after NASA abandoned the design, when the battle for space began the space shuttles were taken out of mothballs and retrofitted as gunships. Of course that doesn't explain why both sides have one, b
ut whatever. [shrug]
