Hey! This thing is still a Work in Progress. Files, instructions, and other stuff might change!

Direct Drive extruder

Description

It can extrude 3mm filament at 35 mm/sec, faster speeds will require a more powerful motor. I am using a 4.4 kg-cm stepper powered at 1.3 Amps.

Instructions

The vertical clearance is kept to a minimum so taller objects can be printed. Not shown in the pictures, but a 40 mm fan is to be mounted in front of the extruder motor.

Not all the pictures open as larger ones to check the details... I really hate what they've done to Thingiverse sometimes...

I'm quite interested in direct drive extruder at the moment. What's the drive gear you are using? I reckon that for 1.75mm filament, a smaller motor could suffice.

Model boats use these type of brass inserts for couplings: http://www.model-dockyard.com/...

1.75mm filament can do with less torque, however, if you use a motor like mine you will be able to print three times faster (100mm/sec) reliably
