PMC Ring Former - Style 1

Description

Attention PMC jewelry makers!

This thing is a PMC ring former. Use it to form ring blanks out of PMC (Precious Metal Clay). Once the ring blank is formed, you can add detail to it or fire it as is.

The STL and DXF files are scaled for a size 7 ring blank. I do not know the finished size after firing. I'll try to remember to post the size after I finally fire one of these.

RR1_C1 and RR1_C2 replace part RR1_C, making it easier to remove the PMC ring blank. Hold the two halves together with rubber bands until the PMC is dry.

Instructions

1) Print the pieces (PLA works best). Print part D upside down for best results.

2) Lubricate all parts with veg oil or as recommended by the PMC manufacturer.

3) Stack part B onto part A.

4) Add part C onto parts A and B.

5) Roll up some PMC and feed it into the ring shaped cavity.

6) Using part D, pack the PMC down into the mold. Use firm pressure. Part E may be used to help push part D to form the ring blank.

7) Allow to dry. You can place the entire thing in a toaster oven set for 150F for 30 minutes (might take a couple of times) to speed up the drying process. When dry, carefully remove the ring blank.

8) Detail the ring blank and fire as directed by the PMC manufacturer.

9) Show off your new ring by wearing it.

Very interesting idea. Do you have any problems as the metal clay dries and shrinks? Does the ring blank crack or stick to the center piece (A)? Could you post a photos of a PMC blank you've made using the ring former? Thanks!

My second attempt, not so good. This may be a good idea, however I think it's a bad design. I'm thinking that if I make part C out of two halves, it will greatly simplify removal of the blank. The two halves could be held together with rubber bands.

My first attempt came out great! No cracks and only had to sand it a little to remove the layer impressions. I dropped it and broke it before I had a chance to fire it. :'(

I took this picture before I broke it. I'm forming another one right now and will post a pic after it's fired and polished.

There is a trick to taking it appart to get the ring blank out. First remove piece A, then lubricate it and reinsert it from the other direction. Next remove piece B, and p
ush piece D (using piece A) so that the ring blank is pushed to the top of the assembly, then gently work the ring off of piece A. This takes some careful twisting and maybe a little cussing.

Be sure to lubricate the pieces very well before building your form or the whole assembly will sieze up an
d you'll have to soak the whole thing in water to get it apart.

Good luck and happy forming 8-)
