Maybe it has just been a while since I've done physics, but if the bottle has water above the line of the water in the trough, why doesn't the water overfill the dish until the water lines match?
Simply because the atmospheric pressure presses above the drinking water but does not act in the bottle .. then the water inside the bottle is balanced by the external atmospheric pressure. (if holes the bottle, the water is pushed down by the atmospheric pressure which enters the hole ...

Cool! Not only good for animals, but also for any plants in pots!
Would you mind sharing your source file too, that would make adapting this to something more pot-like probably a lot easier. (.step or iges would be fine too)
