Description

An open-source design of the N900s stylus for one of the best open-source phones out there ;-)

Compared to the original this model is slightly more edgy but this simplifies printing and gives a little more room for creating a nice finish.

I've included the Blender source so you can modify the pen as you like.

Update:

A word of warning: Since i had to take my measurements of a few pictures a friend of mine took of his original (because i lost mine long ago) i cannot guarantee sub-millimeter accuracy. Plastic parts are easy to modify after printing for making them fit but aluminum and alike are not, please keep that in mind.

One more thing... If you take the .stl and it's just about a cm in length and too narrow to print: Simply scale it up 10 times equally in every dimension. The length should be 9.9cm.

Instructions

This particular part was printed on a BFB 3D-Touch at it's best resolution (0.125mm) but i think it should still work out at 0.25mm. The material used was PLA on a PLA raft (ABS is way too flexible). The small cylinder you can see in the rendering was necessary to slow down printing on the back part, without it the handle just melted while printing.

After printing you should start with removing leftovers from the raft with a file or similar and continue with sandpaper (in my case it was 120 grain) for a nice finish. Be carefull with the back part (the part sticking out of the case) so you don't sand it down too much and also leave the edges at the bottom side in tact. I did both things wrong so you don't have to ;-)

OK, so I grabbed the STL, loaded it up in pronterface, using Slic3r, and it comes out as a single strip of plastic (i.e. 1 stroke of the extruder) about 1cm long.

Any idea what's going on?

Oh, sorry. Since Blender is not really a CAD program and i seem to have forgotten to change Blender-units into cm the thing needs to be scaled up 10 times. (would this even make a change?)

Fantastic; I've always worried I would lose mine and have wondered what I'd do; nice to see I'm not the only one who thinks so.

Wish I hadn't just put in an order with Shapeways but a day or two ago, or I'd have one of these printed up in steel or alumite then give it a couple coats of glossy black paint.

Thanks! And nice to see that this is of use to someone else. :-)

But there is one thing... because i lost mine long ago i had to take measurements using pictures a friend of mine took of his original stylus with a simple ruler next to it. Because of this i cannot guarantee for exact (sub-millimeter) proportions. So if you build this from anything as solid as al
uminum it might not fit, especially the handle.

Made from plastics with a printer the handle fits tight, which in my opinion is a good thing, but it might be a little too tight if made from aluminum. If you have a look at the image with the pen inside the phone you might get an idea. Also the snapp
ing sensation is missing with my print and i don't really know why this is the case or even where this originally came from.

In case you have the capability to check (and maybe correct) the model, tell me the exact proportions in some way, derive from this or whatever i'd appreciate it very much. T
hings should get better. ;-)

If you want to order this from Shapeways you should consider making the handle a tizy-tiny bit more narrow. The blender model should be easy to modify in edit-mode since the smoothing is not applied. It's a matter of moving just a few obvious vertices in the right direc
tion.

Anyway... an incarnation made from any kind of metal would be extremely cool. Too bad i didn't include the NOKIA logo... ;-)
