Turtle Shell Racer – High Power Edition

Description
This is a version of Skimbal's Turtle Shell Racer High Power, slightly modified to work with the New Bright #1680 model RC car. The original called for #2424 which does not seem to be available any longer. #1680 is available at Target as of this writing (May 2012)
All the original files have been run through netfabb to fix slicing errors. There are a couple of new files and/or modifications needed - see the instructions.
Mine is mostly complete, but I'm marking this as a WIP for now until I get it finished.

Instructions
Follow the very well written directions in the original thingiverse.com/thing:10526 with the following differences:
Print the rear wheels at 1.25 scale (125%) in order to make the tires fit well. Print 2 of the supplied nut collars and use them to step down the recesses for the rear wheel nuts back to original size. The nut collar was done in SketchUp.
Use the provided control arm linkage instead of scavenging the one from the New Bright car. I don't see any reason why this can't be a printable part, and besides the dimensions on #1680 are slightly different so you can't use it as is. Still waiting on my backordered servo to arrive so this part is a work in progress until I can do the final install. Find the source for it at tinkercad.com/things/8j18bxwGVZe/
I added a 1 Spike STL so you can more easily print the 5 spikes required for the blue shell.
I had to muddle with the gear sizes to get them all to mesh perfectly but that may just be my printer. I printed Gear 3 at 98% so that it could turn without hitting the gearbox wall. Then I printed Gear 1 (small gear) at 110%. Gear 2 also done at 98%.
The suggested ESC does not seem to be available anywhere. I have a substitute on backorder, will update once received and verified that it works.
The zip file contains all the individual STL & SKP files attached to this thing for easier download.

Thanks! These look awesome. I just got a cheap RC from the second hand place ($1 because the remote was missing). It appeared unbranded, but sounds similar to descriptions / looks similar to the pictures?
I wanted to make a turtle shaped robot, and this design looks like a great jumping off point. Can I get some info though? How much does the shell (including and excluding spikes and wings) weight. I presume the spikes are used to hold the 4 quarters together?
Can I also get some more detailed
measurements of either (or preferabbly both...?) shells? Sorry to be such a pain. I promise to share the data for my robot when she's up and running.
PS - her name will be gertrude!
The spikes don't really hold the pieces together they are just decorative. I guess technically they are anchored on both sides of the seam so they probably do contribute to keeping it together a bit.
Mine are already glued in place so I can't give you a weight of the shell without them. The combined weight of four shell pieces, 5 spikes and two wings is 7.35 ounces (209g)
You should be able to use the Sketchup file from the parent Thing to grab as many measurements as you need, using the tap
e measure tool.
