Would this work well with a TPU filament instead of the TPE of Ninjaflex? I already have TPU from Sainsmart printing nicely with my Printrbot Simple so I'd be inclined to use that if it would still work well for this purpose.

Yes it can be done with TPU. I've made about 12 so far with the Airwolf Wolfbend TPU filament.
