I tried to print this 3 times. The first time i had on full supports, I wasnt able to remove the supports nicely so had to scrap it. I then printed it with no supports, unfortunately the base is too small to support the structure and it ripped off the platfrom. So I tried it one more time with external supports only, so far so good. I love this piece! Cudos! 8-)
I can't believe how well this turned out! It's only like the 4th thing I've printed ever - I'm a total noob. After making a few simple things I decided to push the envelope a bit with this sculpture. I figured it would be an impossible-to-clean mass of supports, but somehow I got the Up! settings such that there were almost no supports at all - just a few under the bottom petals. One of the inner petals looks like it drooped to the side a bit, but overall the result is astonishing and gorgeous. Can't wait to put a light in it!
Are things like this printable at home? I would love to but seems like there are a lot of overhang places. I guess if you print it will have to be with full supports turned on? (Makerbot TOM)
Yes - I printed it on an Up! and to my surprise it turned out really well.
With a TOM i think you'll need a lot of support but not 100% sure about that.
Many of my designs were 3d printed with a replicator, a reprap and now a Bukobot and they turned out amazing without support.

What size bulbs does this fit?
Use LEDs , less heat & less Watts.
