Summary

Not a very loud one, but a pretty fun project. See it in action here: http://youtu.be/V6SdR8xWaw4

Instructions

I printed all the parts in ABS on a Printrbot. The gears were printed at 100% fill, though I'm not sure that was really necessary, the rest was at 40%

Other parts needed:
(2) 1/4 in. hex bolts 2"
(1) 1/4 in. hex bolt 1.5"
(3) 1/4 in. nylock bolts
(2) SR4 bearings (1/4 ID x 5/8 OD x .196) like these: http://www.vxb.com/page/bearings/PROD/SealedBearings/KIt12068
I got all these parts from my local hardware store.

Once you have everything, assembly is fairly straight forward.

update: I added a duplicate small gear as a separate download at the request of a user.

great! one more gear to speed-up the turbine and will be noisier.

That is awesome I LOVE SIRENS I collect them!

How long is the print time?

Was there any reason for the number of slots, or was it an arbitrary decision? I'm working on a 6" one but there doesn't seem to be much on the web about designing for a specific purpose.

It was somewhat arbitrary. my design was loosely based on photos I could find on google images. Thought I believe the changing the number of slots will change the frequency (pitch of the sound) for any given RPM.

ie: for a given horsepower, size, rpm etc.

awesome!

maybe i derivate this to a handcrank fan for bbq purpose

Go for it! I'd love to see a derivative.

ihi i was just wondering if you would get a louder sound if you closed the caing around teh impeller more

Interesting idea, I could give that a try at some point. I was basing my impeller design on photos I saw here http://www.projectresponder.com/q-siren~47.htmhttp://www.projectresponder.co...

hi is it possible toput the smaller gear as a seperate upload.ii need to reprint itas the top of it is all splodgie and unuseable

Sure, done!

Here's mine! similar design but mine is powered. I've been thinking about a hand crank siren, you beat me to it.

Awesome! I see now that I need quite a bit more RPM. I wonder if ABS is up for the kind of forces it would get. Don't let my siren stop you, perhaps you can come up with a better hand cranked version!

I like it, however, I'll like it more when it is louder.
