Description
Universal rear-view mirror radar detector mount. I once paid $80+ for a radar detector mount for my truck... Never again! Now that I own a 3D printer. This is the 2nd requested mod by my wife for her new (used) car.
Instructions
This is in response to custom radar detector mounts costing so much, like: blendmount.com
Instructions:
-Print "RadarDetectorMount.stl"
-Insert an M8 X 1.25mm x 45mm head cap screw into the lower mirror mount
-Spin on a M8 x 1.25mm nylon locking nut and tighten it against the lower mirror mount on the 45mm long head cap screw
-Spin on a 2nd M8 x 1.25 mm nylon locking nut ~15mm up the 45mm long head cap screw
-Slide the printed detector mount on to the 45mm long head cap screw and secure with a 3rd nylon locking nut
-Tighten the 2 nylon locking nuts against the printed detector mount
-Take your detectors factory suction cup mount and pop out the suction cups
-Fasten the factory suction cup mount to the printed detector mount with two M6 x 1.0mm x 20mm head cap screws and 2 M6x 1.0mm nylon locking nuts
-Place the printed top mirror mount on top of the rear-view mirrors windshield bar
-Match the printed lower mirror mount to the top mirror mount and install two M8 x 1.25 x 25mm head cap screws in the two mount holes
-Tighten two M8 x 1.25mm nylon locking nuts to the screws exposed on the mirror mount
-Slide your radar detector onto the factory suction cup rail mount and begin making adjustments
-After desired position is acquired (may need to adjust the 45mm screw and its 2 nuts depending on your setup) tighten up your mirror mount, insert power and go for a test ride!
It is pretty sturdy, almost too sturdy... I may revise the design after a while in the field. The wife said she would detail me on its performance and ride quality :)
This "unique" mount fits right in with her "unique" MKT. I have only heard positive comments on the current setup, hmm, you know, she may just be sparing my feelings by not telling me it is hideous. Oh well, beta's and 1st runs aren't always "pretty" right?
This was designed to easily print on a Thing-O-Matic; I would recommend 20% infill or greater for durability over the years.
For reference this was a "perfect" fit for a 2010 Lincoln MKT running a Passport Escort 8500 X50.
