Description

Here are some decorated disks for a two color printer. The disks print in a few minutes and the openSCAD program provided can be modified to quickly try out ideas for two color prints. The patterns extend completely through the disks which are only 2.5 mm thick. The disks might serve as refrigerator magnets, math teaching tools, earings, or mobiles.

Twelve of the images are derived from plane curves. They are:

cardioid
catenary
evolute of ellipse
sine
three-leaved rose
strophoid
witch of agnesi
lemniscate of bernoulli
limacon
parabola
cubical parabola
semicubical parabola

You will find much information about all of these curves on the internet.

Pairs of stl files for 3 of the disks are included below:

disk_less_evolute.stl and evolute.stl
disk_less_witch.stl and witch.stl
disk_less_sine.stl and sine.stl

Decorated_disks_stl.zip contains all 14 pairs of stl files.

Instructions

The disks are 40 mm in diameter and 2.5 mm thick and have a 1 mm raised rim on the upper side. Printed directly on the build platform they have attractive surfaces.

The openSCAD code allows one to vary the size and thickness of the disks and the decorations. The rim can be eliminated to produce a simple disk if that is required.

A single open scad program produced all of the disks. A decoration is chosen from a list and the other members are commented out. The program is run once using the difference statement to make say disk_less_evolute.stl. The program is then run a second time using the intersection statement to produce evolute.stl.
