This is a parametric gauntlet for mechen printed hands. I have seen a lot of good gauntlets lately, but all that I have seen are only in stl format. Although I could use a scaling percentage to make one key parameter correct - like the width of the wrist - that then left other parameters incorrect. Manually editing the stls is too much effort. With this OpenSCAD script, you can instead adjust a bunch of parameters to create a custom made stl. That stl will be sized to fit better, as well as customized in many ways. Some of the adjustments that can be made are:
- width and thickness of arm at wrist
- length of the gauntlet
- width and thickness of arm at the end of the gauntlet
- wall thickness of the gauntlet shell
- extra spacing inside shell for padding or such
- width and height of slots for Velcro straps
- width and height of the base rails
- size of wrist screw holes
- amount of straight rail extension between wrist pivot and start of shell
- whether to include bracing rings at front and/or middle and/or back of shell
- width of any such bracing rings
- whether to include a curved cutout in the front and/or back
- size of any such cutout
- whether to include an integrated string tuner

- how far from the wrist
- how many tuners
- what size tuners
- any additional tuner elevation above the gauntlet
- whether to include an integrated string guide
if so then also
- how far from the wrist
- how many strings
- what size strings
- any additional string elevation above the gauntlet
This is still a work in progress, but I wanted to make it available to those who are currently trying to make such parts manually.
I added a few more customizable parameters. It is now possible to select either 1 or 2 velcro slots. It came to my attention that there was some demand to make 1 slot gauntlets - especially when it is a small one for a child. I then added Velcro_Offset1 and Velcro_Offset2. Those allow custom shifting of the velcro slots forward (negative value) or back (positive value). If there is only one slot, then only Offset1 applies. If there are two slots then Offset1 applies to the front slot and Offset2 applies to the back slot. Also, since I have seen many prints of similar parts that did not turn out so well, I add a rail support option. That adds small blocks where the round parts curve off the print bed. That makes the parts print much better, but requires a bit of filing or sanding to round the part back out.
Copy all of the .scad files into a working directory.
Open the Include-HandParameters.scad file and edit the parameters for wrist and arm width and thickness, as well as gauntlet length. All values should be in mm. Save that file. That should cover all of the measurable elements from the user's hand. Ignore the other parameters in that file. This file is part of a set of files that will eventually make a complete hand - but I am not posting the other files yet.
Open the David-Gauntlet.scad file and edit the parameters there. Those parameters are specific to this individual part. I have tried to include enough comments to explain the parameters that it is possible to tell how they work. If not, try changing it and see what it does. Customize the part as you see fit. Then go to the Design menu in OpenSCAD and select Compile and Render. Once that is done, go to Design --> Export as STL... I always suggest running the finished stl through Netfabb, but I have not found any errors are produced. Then print the gauntlet. I believe you will need to use support for it to print well.
