Why did you need to spread the belt?
I was thinking/hoping that the distance between the idler and gear pulley would be enough that their differences in diameter would not matter.

Non-parallel belts can cause a small non-linearity when the carriage is moving at the bottom. With this small difference may be even less than the accuracy of motion of the entire system. But ... printer looks so much nicer when the belts are parallel. :)
