Description

This is a basic spool holder I designed in Sketchup, after seeing some of the other spool holders here. My version is very simplistic, being just a triangle style frame held together by 1/4" wooden dowels.

You'll need a wire or rope spool from a hardware store, or another type of spool to utilize this holder. I am designing a printable spool that will be compatible with this holder, which I will add to this thing when I have it finished.

The horizontal holes do have a bit of an 'unsupported overhang' at the top, however mine printed without any issues (as you can see in the image). Your mileage may vary ;-).

Instructions

Print 2 of each piece (top, footA, and footB). Use 1/4" wooden dowels to connect the pieces together. You'll need 6 equal sections for the sides, 2 equal sections for the front and back, and one slightly longer piece for the top.

For my setup I used the following lengths:

Sides (x6) : 240mm
Front/Back (x2): 230mm
Top (x1) : 255mm

Why does it end with ...??

Works well, I sourced a spool from the hardware store, It is only about 3" wide and the two halves bolt together for easy spool loading. I need some sort of tensioning device however as the plastic wants to backlash on the spool. I also drew up a bushing to use on your spool to fit it to the rod.

Have you put a 5lb spool of plastic on this yet? I tried going down the broom handle route with mine because I was afraid of small dowels being too weak, but this definitely looks much cleaner. Good work.

Thanks!

It's holding up quite well with my current 1lb of filament (and a larger, much heavier spool than pictured here). I did a test balancing the 5lb filament on top of the spool while it was on the dowels, and it held. I believe the sides are sturdy enough, but the top dowel bowed and made me nervous.

Shortening the top/front/back bars would probably help it support more weight. I also plan on upgrading the top piece to support a larger diameter dowel before I start using my 5lb roll.

You, my friend, are awesome. Thank you.
