Description

Felt a very urgent need to get this out there once I saw this xkcd:
xkcd.com/743/

As much fun as having a tiny violin might be, I'm really hoping we'll eventually have a real violin, or at the very least ample violin accessories here.

Instructions

I think you could use a toothpick as a bow-- I don't think there's a way to print a good bow at this scale...

Okay, I uploaded it to "I Made One." I have to give back one of those Internets I won, because I couldn't figure out last night why I couldn't find the "I made One" button.

I wasn't logged in. I blame lack of sleep.

AHEM:

YOU, have just won five internets and a keychain to keep them on.

Upload to I Made This please?

Now you can be playing your own tiny violin for $1 each at Shapeways:

These ones are even a bit more detailed.

You need a few of them to get to the minimum order of $ 25 to get free shipping, but you can also order other designs and cool stuff. Remember, bigger volume objects get expensive VERY quickly... this tiny violin is only affordable because it's so damn TINY (I actually lost one already, right after I had printed it!).

Cool, the tiny violin is featured on Make Magazine and Geekosystem.com too now :)

Printed a few of these as test pieces. The photo is of a larger version, about 65mm in length, though I have gone down to the 20mm version.

I've just made one, only mine is 3 times the size so I could print it a bit easier. I'm planning on putting it in my pocket at work and using it to win arguments :P

One more reason to spend 1200 on a MakerBot...

Or make a machine from scratch for less than $500.
(100 hours of debugging not included)

Looks very fiddly.

You should make it hollow, so it can actually resonate somewhat like a real violin(the smaller size means it should operate at higher frequencies). Also I believe it's possible we could make this violin much smaller using open source techniques.

This is your bow:
