Summary

I thought it'd be nice to make some Xmas ornaments to give as gifts and then share the design with you all on Thingiverse! I've uploaded a generic 'Merry Christmas' version and a blank version as well as a version with a hole to tie a string to if you don't feel like drilling a hole with a Dremel.

Instructions

I printed these on my Afinia H-Series 3d Printer (UP! Plus). It stands at about 5 inches tall. The settings that I used were 150 microns with loose fill.

Use your favorite 3d program to add text. Make sure the text sits on the 'branches' and are thick enough so that it's not too thin. I think I used a minimum of 8 or 8.5mm thickness on the letters.

I printed mine standing up. I didn't bother trying to print it flat. I'm not finished with my ornaments yet but I think I will be painting the letters and the star to make it really pop!

Thank-you for sharing
great idea 3 years later
Merry Christmas 2015

A student of mine printed this on a MakerBot 5th generation laying flat. When the raft was removed the trunk parts were not attached to the rest of the tree parts. It looked as if the trunk pieces would insert into each other but that wasn't the case. How do we get it to print as 1 whole piece.

Thank you for making a solid version of the Merry Christmas ornament. We were able to print the ornament on our MakerBot 5th generation without the parts separating.

Glad it worked out!

I'm not sure what happened. No one else has had a problem I don't think. Nonetheless, I've uploaded another version that I took into Meshmixer and made solid. This is an old model. Let me know if you try to print this again and if you have success.

How did you print that standing up? Did you use support mat'l, then clean it up later?

Can you upload this as a customizable model?? I'm not familiar with 3d softwares but I can easily use Customizer... Pretty pretty please?! :D
