Summary

More efficient, quieter, and smoother than using the H-bridge hack on the GEN 3 extruder controller to drive a stepper based extruder and cheaper than using a full on stepper controller. This simple Pololu stripboard will let you hook up a 1/16 microstepping stepper motor for under $20. Even someone with my pathetic soldering skills can build one.

Instructions

A BOM and more documentation can be found here: http://reprap.org/wiki/Pololu_Extruder_Stripboard

Instructions for running a stepper extruder on a MakerBot running pre-V2 firmware can be found here: http://wiki.makerbot.com/stepper-driven-extruder

Note: I'm using this on my RepRap and haven't actually tested it on a MakerBot yet, but it should work.

No results.

btw, I was going thru your design. And for makerbot or reprap it will work as a charm, since people only use one power supply, to use 2 power supplies you need to connect the 2 grounds together.

Great stuff Tony! I am doing mine to place on a makerbot. Seems like Makerbot has 3 beta releases for step extruder support, they probably figured out that MK5 with DC motor was a pretty bad move. btw I know this circuit is pretty simple, but a schematic would be nice.
