Summary

This is a basic calibration model for a 3d printer made to save time and filament. It measures 1" in all three axes with each leg measuring 1/4" square.

Instructions

  1. Print the part using the provided .STL file. All dimensions are in mm (except above).
  2. Use a caliper to check accuracy per the specified dimensions (1:1 size of 1")
  3. Adjust printer calibration parameters and repeat as necessary

Notes:
Low extrusion temperatures and/or use of a fan is recommended while printing the Z "leg"

Update 12/23/12: Changed the .STL to metric dimensions, the resulting part is still 1" cubed, but the .STL dimensions are now in mm.

This is a very bad idea. The error on a printer is an absolute error. Adjusting settings so that this prints to exactly one arbitrary imperial unit will result in a percentage error. When you print something larger you will find it is out by a few millimeters rather than the smaller absolute value.

This can be fixed with software, but making a simple linear adjustments will result in further problems.

Your statement is well intentioned, but short-sighted by assuming this is limited to position calibration. This model works great for fine tuning extrusion parameters, temperatures, and fan settings for small parts. It also helps evaluate orthogonality.

The model itself is also a great educational tool for teaching coordinate systems and reference frames, especially when printed in multiple colors.

If you have trouble with the small Z riser consider printing two of these are something else at the same time that is at least as tall.

Top
