All the talk of cliffs lead me to thinking of a way to model a rock cliff.
This is lame, but I spent some time on the Cliff module so I'm posting in case someone wants something to make an irregular surface with.
It's difficult to generate the perspective that says 'CLIFF!'

Instructions
I wouldn't bother...but if you do, fiddle with the seed value for variety.
