Ryan North's exploding head!
Description
"I will literally explode" - Ryan North
Update Feb 11: We blew it up! Full story on Wired: wired.com/design/2013/02/ryan-north-kickstarted-head-pop/
Ryan's promise to explode after reaching the $500,000 mark on his book's Kickstarter inspired me to reach out to him, and offer the services of Site 3 coLaboratory in order to help him fulfill his goal.
The first step was to make a 3D scan of Ryan using ReconstructMe and a Microsoft Kinect: kickstarter.com/projects/breadpig/to-be-or-not-to-be-that-is-the-adventure/posts/384256
Next, I cleaned up the 3D scan and have now uploaded a mini-bust version that everyone can print out at home. See a video of one being printed: youtu.be/zcCjJxf-oew
Finally, our team will use a large-scale 3D print of just the head portion for future explodening. (Still in progress.)

Instructions
The head version (ryan_north-HEAD.zip) contains the STL file parts, as well as the Netfabb project I used to split it into sections that fit on my MakerBot Cupcake. There are also optional, further split versions of the middle3 and middle4 parts that save a lot of time by reducing the amount of support material during a print. The chamber inside fits a NOS energy drink bottle.
The mini-bust (ryan_north-BUST.stl) is fully repaired/processed and scaled way down in size to 65mm tall. (It fits on a MakerBot Cupcake.) Don't feel shy about scaling it up! From the video you can see that printing it out really small lost a fair bit of detail on the shop's RepRap.
The raw version (ryan_north-RAW.stl) is the unaltered 3D scan as produced by ReconstructMe. You might want to start with that version if you'd like to do some fancy remixing. (Although the mini-bust version is just fine for stuff like turning Ryan into a Pez head!)

I am so glad that this happened. I chuckled at the promise to explode in the Kickstarter, but I never imagined it would come around to Thingiverse!
Thanks, techknight, for making it happen! Extra props for cranking it out on a Cupcake. :)
