Walter, love your work mate... I just made something like this using OpenSCAD... and have now found yours... can't wait to look at your code and see how you did it... My approach was to specify the outer size and just evenly split up the middle into cells based on the specified cols/rows... I like your approach too, and the options you have... check out mine here:
